Real town names are almost always a description of the place or a memory of who settled it. English-speaking towns follow a small set of patterns: a founder plus a feature (Miller's Crossing, Hatcher's Bend), a natural feature plus a landform (Cedar Hollow, Pine Ridge, Otter Creek), an old English compound that has worn smooth into one word (Ashgrove, Brackenfield, Willoughby), or a hopeful abstract noun the founders chose on purpose (Temperance, Amity, Harmony Grove). Infrastructure words like Junction, Station, Mills, Ford and Landing date a town to the railroad, river or wagon era, which is useful when you want the name to carry history.

The trick to a believable fictional town is restraint. One strong image is enough; Blackthorn works, Blackthorn Shadow Valley does not. Mixing sub-styles across a map also helps: a county with a Saint Aubrey, a Quarry Bend and a Lonesome Pine feels settled by different people in different decades, which is how real regions look.
