DnD Village Name Generator
Hamlets, crossroads and fishing villages for your campaign
Generate D&D village names that sound lived-in: English-style hamlets like Barrowford and Ashcombe, crossroads and landmark names like Hobb's Landing and Three Oaks, plus dwarven, elven, halfling, coastal and haunted settlements. Includes a few canon Forgotten Realms villages for reference.
About DnD village names
Most D&D adventures start in a village, and the name does more work than the map. Published settings lean on an English rural template because it reads as 'home' to players instantly: Phandalin, Red Larch, Greenest, Hommlet and Saltmarsh all follow it. The pattern is a plain, concrete first element (a tree, a river feature, a trade, an animal, a founder) joined to a settlement word such as -ford, -wick, -combe, -mere, -stead, -hollow or -cross. Barrowford tells you there is a ford and an old grave; Tanner's Ford tells you who built it and what it smells like.
Good village names also sound different from town and city names. A city can be Waterdeep or Neverwinter; a village should be smaller in the mouth, often two short syllables or a two-word phrase with a possessive (Hobb's Landing, Pilgrim's Rest). Directional and size prefixes (Little Dunmere, Upper Sallow, Nether Wyke) are a cheap way to imply that a bigger settlement exists nearby.
This list mixes that rustic register with regional flavour: Norse- and Celtic-tinged names for the frontier, dwarven holds, elvish glades, halfling farm hamlets, coastal fishing villages, desert wells and haunted fens for the session where the party arrives after dark.
How to choose DnD village names
- Pick the name from what the village is known for (a ford, a mill, a shrine, a hanging tree) so players can guess its character before they reach the gate.
- Use a possessive name (Hobb's Landing, Tormund's Rest) when you want an NPC hook: the founder's descendants, grave or debt become an instant plot thread.
- Prefixes like Little, Upper, Nether, Old and East imply a neighbouring settlement, which is an easy way to sketch the region without drawing it.
- Match the suffix to the terrain: -ford and -bridge for rivers, -mere for lakes, -fen and -moor for wetlands, -holt and -wick for woods and farms, -cairn and -holm for cold uplands.
- For a village that is secretly wrong, give it an unremarkable name (Fallow Mill, Sparrowmead) rather than an ominous one; let the players discover why it is empty.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a village name feel like D&D rather than generic fantasy?
Grounded, concrete English roots. The Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk villages that players recognise (Phandalin, Red Larch, Hommlet, Saltmarsh) are named for larches, hamlets, salt and marshes, not for abstract nouns. Keep the first element physical and the suffix a real settlement word and it will sit naturally beside canon places.
Which canon D&D villages are included?
A handful from the Sword Coast and Greyhawk so you can see the pattern: Phandalin, Red Larch, Greenest, Nightstone, Thundertree, Conyberry, Triboar, Longsaddle, Amphail, Hommlet, Nulb, Orlane, Restenford and Saltmarsh. The rest are original and safe to use in homebrew or published-adventure campaigns.
How is a village name different from a town or city name?
Shorter and humbler. Cities in D&D tend toward grand compounds (Waterdeep, Baldur's Gate, Silverymoon); villages use one or two plain syllables, a trade or landmark, and often a possessive or a directional prefix. If a name sounds like it belongs on a coin, it is probably a city.
Can I use these names for other fantasy games or novels?
Yes. Only the canon entries belong to Wizards of the Coast settings; the original names work for Pathfinder, OSR games, video game mods and fiction. The regional sets (dwarven, elvish, halfling, coastal, desert) transfer to any world with those peoples or terrains.
