New Leaf and older games cap town names at 8 characters, and villagers use the name constantly, so anything hard to read on a Switch screen gets old fast. The cosiest names borrow from nature and food. Compound names like Willowmere, Berrybrook or Peachaven read like a real village; single fruit or dessert words (Clementine, Mochi, Toffee) suit a pastel or kawaii island; and Japanese words such as Sakura, Hoshi or Kumo pay homage to the game's origins. Fans also love in-jokes named after Tom Nook (Nooksbury), bells (Bellhaven) or the turnip stalk market (Turnipton). Grander single-word names (Halcyon, Elysium, Aurora) suit heavily terraformed 'aesthetic' islands, while cottagecore builds tend toward Foxhollow, Hedgerow and Toadstool.

When picking, say the name inside the phrases the game will use: 'Welcome to Mossmere Island', 'the Mossmere Museum', 'Mossmere Airport'. If those all sound right, and it fits the character limit, you have a name you will still like a thousand hours in.
