Generate ship names across every tradition: navy warships, ocean liners, cargo and research vessels, and the kind of evocative names that anchor a novel or a game fleet. Includes real naming conventions like HMS, USS, and MV prefixes so your ship sounds legitimate.

About ship names

Ship names carry more convention than almost any other kind of vehicle name. Navies name by class and tradition: the Royal Navy reuses battle-honour names like Ark Royal, Illustrious, and Warspite across centuries, and favors single confident adjectives (Daring, Defender). The US Navy names carriers after presidents and admirals, destroyers after naval heroes, and amphibious ships after battles (Tripoli, Bataan). Cruise lines brand entire fleets with a formula: Royal Caribbean's "of the Seas," Cunard's Queens, Viking's stars.

Prefixes tell you what a ship is. HMS and USS mark commissioned warships; USNS is a US Navy support ship with a civilian crew; USCGC is Coast Guard; RRS is a British research ship; MV means motor vessel, SS means steamship, and RV means research vessel. Container ships and tankers usually carry the owner's name plus a place or letter theme (Emma Maersk, MSC Gülsün, Ever Given), and Great Lakes freighters are almost always named after company executives.

For fiction and games, the most convincing approach is to borrow one of these systems. A navy that names every cruiser after a virtue (Tenacity, Fidelity, Sagacity), or a shipping line whose hulls are all birds, reads as a real institution rather than a random list. Single-word names from mythology (Persephone, Hyperion, Nereus) work in almost any setting from steampunk to hard sci-fi.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Get the prefix right: HMS or USS for warships, MV for a modern civilian motor vessel, RV for research ships, and no prefix for pirates and privateers.
  • Build a naming scheme for a whole fleet (virtues, birds, admirals, battles) so ships feel like they belong to the same navy or company.
  • Do not add 'the' before a prefixed name; it is HMS Victory, never 'the HMS Victory.'
  • For a menacing fictional warship, use one hard word (Relentless, Furious); for a liner or luxury vessel, use a queen, a star, or a place.
  • If a name will appear in print, check whether it is a currently commissioned real ship; readers of naval fiction notice.

Frequently asked questions

How does the US Navy decide ship names?

The Secretary of the Navy assigns names, following conventions by ship type: aircraft carriers after presidents and prominent leaders, destroyers after Navy and Marine heroes, submarines traditionally after fish and later states and cities, and amphibious assault ships after famous battles.

What do HMS, USS, MV, and SS stand for?

HMS is His or Her Majesty's Ship (Royal Navy), USS is United States Ship (commissioned US Navy), MV is motor vessel, SS is steamship, RV is research vessel, and USNS is United States Naval Ship, used for civilian-crewed Navy support ships.

Can two ships have the same name?

Within one navy, no two commissioned ships share a name at the same time, but names are reused across generations; there have been eight USS Enterprises. Civilian registries usually only require the name plus port of registry to be unique.

Can I use these names in my novel or game?

Yes. Real historical ship names are not protected, and invented ones here are free to use. Named fictional ships from other franchises (Nostromo, Black Pearl) are included as reference points and should not be lifted into commercial work.
