The first thing Cities: Skylines asks for is a city name, and the best ones match the map you picked. The game's stock maps and most Workshop and Paradox Mods maps are modelled on temperate North America and Western Europe, so names built from the same pieces real planners used work best: a landscape word (ridge, bay, ford, haven, mere, bridge, falls) joined to a family name or an old English, German, Dutch or Nordic root. Calder Bay, Harrowgate and Nordhavn all read as places that could have a county seat and a bus network.

Think about what your city will become before you name it. A name ending in Harbor, Port or Bay promises a waterfront and cargo ships; Heights, Ridge or Summit fits a mountain map; Springs, Falls and Mere suit river-delta and lake maps. European-flavoured names (Ashworth-on-Sea, Neustadt am Fluss, Zuiderhaven) pair well with the European building themes and tram-heavy layouts. If you plan a tourism or megalopolis build, a grander name such as Port Aurelio or New Horizon City sets the tone for the district names that follow.

And if the save is destined to be a traffic disaster, the community tradition of self-aware names (Gridlock Heights, Trafficton, Roundabout City) is alive and well.
