Why so many generators?

A single “random name” tool can't know whether you want a Norse god, a Victorian surname or a bakery. So instead of one giant list, every generator here covers one subject, and its list is written to follow that subject's conventions: elvish names lean on flowing vowels, Japanese town names are built from real place-name elements, and business names are kept short and easy to spell.

How the lists are made

Every generator draws from a fixed, stored list of names. When you press Generate, the page picks from that list at random, so everyone gets the same de-duplicated and screened list. On a few pages of first and last names, new batches also pair the first name of one entry with the last name of another, and the tool says so there. On a few others, such as the business name generator, you can type a word of your own: about half of each new batch is then built around it in your browser, and those names carry a label because they are not in the list and have not been screened. On the two couple name pages you can also type two names, and the page blends their letters in your browser: a blend does not come from the list, an automatic filter for offensive words is the only screen it passes, and the names you type are not sent to us or stored.

We draft the lists from instructions about the conventions of each genre, such as the naming patterns of a franchise, real-language name elements, or the way shops in a trade tend to be named. Each draft is then de-duplicated and screened for filler and offensive terms by script. No separate genre review follows, and the lists are not checked against trademarks or a franchise's canon. Drafting at this scale is quick, and it also makes mistakes. A name can land in the wrong culture, and a name for a fan universe can drift from canon. We don't present these lists as verified historical or linguistic records, so if a detail matters to you, such as the origin of a baby name, check it against a specialist source.

Who runs the site

Name Generator Central is published by Click Clack Labs LLC, a small independent publisher. There is no newsroom or large staff behind it, which is one reason corrections from readers matter. The site is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any of the franchises, games or brands its generators refer to.

There's no account, no paywall and no limit on how many names you can generate. The site is supported by advertising, which is what keeps it free. We don't claim ownership of the names. Use the original names you generate for personal or commercial projects. Names that come from a book, film, show, game or other franchise stay with their owners (see the terms of service), and for a business or product name, run your own trademark and domain checks first.
