About fictional kingdom names

Kingdom names in fiction do a lot of quiet work. Before a reader learns anything about Gondor, Ravka, or Ankh-Morpork, the name has already told them whether the place is noble, cold, or absurd. The most convincing fictional kingdom names borrow real linguistic patterns: Latinate endings like -ia and -oria (Avaloria, Cimmeria) feel ancient and imperial; Germanic and Old English elements like -mark, -march, -moor, and -holt (Halvenmark, Greymarch, Varenholt) feel like feudal Europe; Celtic and Welsh sounds (Prydwen, Caeldrith, Rhosvane) feel misty and old; and hard Norse compounds (Ulvenmark, Nordvale) feel like the frozen north.

Structure matters as much as sound. A bare name (Merovia) works for everyday reference on a map. A formal style (the Holy Kingdom of Sarenthal, the Grand Duchy of Tolvane) belongs in treaties, heraldry, and the mouths of heralds. Descriptive names (the Kingdom of the Broken Crown, the Realm of the Drowned Kings) hint at history and are perfect for kingdoms whose past is a plot point. Real-world political terms such as margravate, palatinate, khaganate, and protectorate add texture and imply a specific kind of government.

The names here include invented realms with authentic roots, formal titles, descriptive epithets, and a handful of famous fictional kingdoms for reference. Use the famous ones to calibrate the tone you want, then pick or adapt an invented one for your own world.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide the kingdom's real-world analogue first, then match the sound: -ia endings for a Rome or Byzantium stand-in, -mark or -march for a Holy Roman Empire feel, Welsh-style spellings for an Arthurian realm.
  • Give each kingdom a short everyday name and a long formal one (Ostrand vs. the Free Kingdom of Ostrand). Characters use the short form; documents and heralds use the long one.
  • Descriptive names like the Kingdom of the Broken Crown should point to a real event in your setting's history that you can pay off later.
  • Avoid two kingdoms on the same map that share an initial letter or ending; readers confuse Valoria and Vandermere far more easily than Valoria and Highmoor.
  • Say the name aloud with a demonym: 'the Merovian army,' 'a Halvenmarker.' If the demonym is awkward, the name will be a nuisance across a whole book.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a fictional kingdom name sound realistic?

Borrow the sound patterns of a real language family and stay consistent: Latinate endings (-ia, -oria) for imperial realms, Germanic elements (-mark, -moor, -holt) for feudal ones, Celtic spellings for old, misty kingdoms. Real place-name suffixes make invented names feel lived-in.

Should I use 'Kingdom of' in the name?

Use it for the formal title and drop it in everyday speech. Most fictional realms are referred to by the bare name (Gondor, Ravka), with 'the Kingdom of' reserved for treaties, maps, and ceremony.

What are some famous fictional kingdom names?

Gondor and Rohan (Tolkien), Narnia and Archenland (Lewis), Florin and Guilder (The Princess Bride), Ankh-Morpork and Lancre (Discworld), Ravka and Fjerda (Grishaverse), and Adarlan and Terrasen (Throne of Glass) are among the best known.

Can I use these kingdom names in my published novel or game?

The invented names are free to use in any project. The famous fictional kingdoms listed for reference belong to their authors and should be used only as inspiration.
