Desert City Name Generator

Desert cities are named for the one thing that lets them exist: water. Look at any map of the Sahara, Arabia, or Central Asia and you will see the same elements repeat. Arabic ain (spring), bir (well), wadi (seasonal river), and ras (headland or cape) mark where caravans could stop; qasr, hisn, and qal'at mean fortress or castle; bab is a gate, suq a market, and dar or madinat a house or city. Persian shahr means city and abad means "built by", so Yazdabad is simply "founded by Yazd". Berber Saharan towns like Ghadames, Djanet, and Tamanrasset show a different sound entirely, softer and often ending in vowels or -et.

The list above blends real oasis and caravan cities (Merv, Timbuktu, Kashgar, Siwa, Jaisalmer) with invented names built on the same roots (Qasr al-Rimal, "Castle of the Sands"; Ain Sabra, "Cactus Spring"; Kavir Shahr, "Salt-Desert City"). Fantasy names such as Sunspire, Zerzura, and the Brass City draw on English compounds and on the legendary lost cities of desert lore, including Iram of the Pillars and Ubar.
