American city names come in a small number of recognizable patterns, and a fictional one only convinces if it follows one of them. The most common is a person plus a suffix: Harrisburg, Pendleton, Ellsworth, Whitcomb. Next are landmark names that describe what the founders saw, such as Cedar Rapids, Poplar Bluff, Grand Junction and Twin Falls. The West adds Spanish mission and rancho names (San Benito, Paso Robles, Las Palmas), anglicized Native words (Wenatchee, Tuskegee, Kokomo), and French trading posts along the rivers (Terre Haute, Fond du Lac, Presque Isle).

The 1800s left two more layers. Classical revivals like Ithaca, Syracuse, Carthage and Palmyra spread across upstate New York and the Midwest, while boosters sold lots in places called Enterprise, Prosperity, Independence and Eden Prairie. Military and commercial origins survive as Fort and Port names, and biblical ones as Bethel, Goshen and Mount Zion. Fictional cities that feel real, from Bedford Falls to Hill Valley to Pawnee, borrow these patterns instead of inventing new ones.
