About english city names
Real English city names are layered history, and a fictional one sounds right when it borrows the same layers. The Romans left -chester, -cester and -caster (from castra, a fort): Winchester, Gloucester, Lancaster. The Anglo-Saxons added -bury (a fortified place), -ford, -ham, -ton and -minster (a great church), and the Norse settlers of the north and east contributed -by and -thorpe. Ports took -mouth, -pool and -port from the rivers and harbours they sit on. A city-scale name usually has one of those heavyweight endings, which is why Aldchester and Kingsmouth feel like places with a cathedral and a station while Ashcombe Magna feels like a village.
The first element matters just as much. Most are a person (Athelstanbury, Eadricsford, Ketilsby), a river (Lydmouth, Tarncaster), a landscape feature (Fenchester, Hurstpool) or a resource the town was built on (Saltcaster, Ironminster). A few affixes signal status or position: Regis for a royal charter, Magna and Parva for the larger and smaller of a pair, Bishop's or Abbot's for church ownership, and -on-Sea or -upon-Thames for riverside and coastal cities.
The list also includes Roman Latin names of the kind that precede the English ones (Glevum, Lindum, Eburacum), Norman-French forms, and industrial-era names for mill and mining cities, so you can cover every period from a Roman fort to a Victorian manufacturing town.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick the ending by the city's history: -chester or -caster for a Roman foundation, -minster for a cathedral city, -mouth or -pool for a port, -bury or -ford for a Saxon market town, -by or -thorpe for a northern or eastern city with Viking roots.
- Keep it to two or three syllables before the suffix; real English cities are short (Leeds, York, Bath, Derby) and long invented names like Beorhtricsbridge read as villages or as jokes.
- Make neighbouring cities on your map sound like neighbours: a Norse -by cluster in the north-east, Cornish Pen- and Tre- in the south-west, Roman -cester along the old roads, so the geography has a history.
- Use status affixes sparingly: one Regis, one Magna and one Bishop's on a map is flavour, five of each is noise. The same goes for -on-Sea and -upon-Thames.
- Say the name in a sentence with a football club, a railway station or a cathedral attached (Aldchester City, Kingsmouth Central, the Bishop of Hexminster) and drop anything that sounds silly.
Frequently asked questions
What do English city name endings like -chester, -bury and -minster mean?
-chester, -cester and -caster come from Latin castra and mark a Roman fort or walled town (Manchester, Leicester, Doncaster). -bury and -borough come from Old English burh, a fortified settlement (Canterbury, Peterborough). -minster means a major church or monastery (Westminster, Axminster). -mouth is a river mouth (Plymouth), -ford a river crossing (Oxford), -ham a homestead, -ton an enclosure or farm, and -by a Norse farm or village (Derby, Whitby).
How is this different from the English town name generator?
Town and village names in England tend to be lighter and more rural: -ley, -cote, -thwaite, double-barrelled parish names like Stoke St Mary. This generator focuses on city-scale names with the heavy Roman, cathedral and port endings (-chester, -minster, -mouth, -caster) plus Roman Latin and industrial-era forms, so the results sound like county towns and cathedral cities rather than hamlets.
Are these real English cities?
No. Every name is invented to follow the real patterns, and a few Roman Latin names (Glevum, Lindum, Eburacum) are included for historical flavour. Because English place-name elements are so common, some invented names may coincide with a small village or a street somewhere, so do a quick search if you need a name that is completely unique.
Can I use these names for a fantasy or alternate-history setting?
Yes. English-style city names are the backbone of countless fantasy maps because readers instantly understand them. For a medieval or Tudor setting lean on -chester, -bury, -minster and Bishop's or King's prefixes; for a Victorian or steampunk setting use the industrial names like Loomcaster, Furnaceford and Smokeminster; for a Roman-era story use the Latin forms.
