Skyrim's settlements follow a few clear patterns, and a convincing new town should fit one of them. The nine hold capitals are mostly short, heavy compounds in plain English or Old Nordic: Whiterun, Windhelm, Winterhold, Markarth, Riften, Solitude. Smaller places tend to be two-word descriptions of a landmark or a person (Dragon Bridge, Shor's Stone, Anga's Mill, Darkwater Crossing) or single compounds built from a feature and a settlement word like -stead, -watch, -hold, -vik or -heim (Ivarstead, Rorikstead, Northwatch). Older maps from Arena and ESO add towns like Amol, Dunstad, Nimalten and Snowhawk that are fair game for modders.

The vocabulary is what sells it. Nord places lean on cold, stone, wolves, ravens, frost, mead, barrows, dragons and the names of ancestors and gods (Kyne, Shor, Talos, Ysgramor). The Reach borrows Karth- and harsh consonant clusters, Hjaalmarch names feel damp and low, and Solstheim mixes Nordic words with Dunmer ones like Tel Mithryn and Raven Rock.

This list blends canon locations for reference, Old Norse-style compounds with authentic endings (-vik, -holm, -stad, -garth, -fell, -sund), English-style landmark names, and places named after jarls, farmers and heroes. For a lore-friendly mod or campaign, match the style to the hold: heavy compounds near Windhelm, Imperial-tinged names around Solitude, grim one-word names for the Pale and Winterhold.
