Generate fantasy city names that sound like they belong on a map: walled capitals, river ports, mountain holds, desert trade cities, elven havens and drow undercities. Ideal for D&D campaigns, novels, video games and worldbuilding projects.

About fantasy city names

Real city names are almost never invented from nothing. They describe the place (Oxford is the ford where oxen crossed), honour a founder or saint, or fossilise an older language nobody speaks any more. Good fantasy city names borrow all three habits. Compound English names like Blackbridge, Saltcrest and Marrowgate tell you what the city is built around; names with an invented root such as Vaelmoor, Ilvarion or Kharzadun suggest a local tongue; and titles like City of Brass or the Free City of Varn imply politics before you have written a word of history.

This generator mixes those families deliberately. You will find walled capitals and river ports, mountain holds with dwarven-style names, elven havens with soft liquid consonants, drow undercities full of apostrophes, desert trade cities, far-eastern harbours, jungle ruins, grim border towns and a run of plain descriptive names (Twinrivers, Last Ford, Smuggler's Cove) that make a map feel lived in.

For a coherent world, give each culture its own sound and stick to it. If the humans of the heartland live in Thornhaven and Redmarch, a neighbouring human city called Xul'Thar will feel foreign, which is fine if it is foreign and jarring if it is not. Save the long, ornate names for the places that matter most.

How to choose fantasy city names

  • Pick one naming style per culture or region: English compounds for the heartland, Latinate or invented roots for an old empire, apostrophes and harsh consonants for the underdark. Mixing styles within one nation makes the map feel random.
  • Let the name describe the city's reason to exist. Ports get Harbor, Quay, Landing or Bay; fortress cities get Hold, Keep, Gate or Spire; trade cities can carry the name of a river, a crossing or a founder.
  • Use two-word names sparingly and for important places. 'City of a Thousand Spires' is a capital; a village at the edge of the map should be 'Kettlebrook'.
  • Give your biggest cities a nickname or old name as well (the Glass City, Old Merrow). Real cities accumulate names over time and it is an easy way to add depth.
  • Say names aloud and check the first syllable. Players will shorten Kharzadun to Khar and Seraphel to Sera, so make sure the short form still sounds right.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a fantasy city name sound realistic?

Base it on something concrete: a river, a hill, a bridge, a founder or a trade good. Most real city names started as descriptions, so Saltcrest, Coldharbour or Ravensgate sound more plausible than a string of random syllables. Then keep the spelling consistent with the other names in the same region.

Can I use these names for D&D or Pathfinder?

Yes. The list is built for tabletop worldbuilding and includes capitals, trade ports, dwarven holds, elven cities, drow undercities and seedy border towns, so you can name every settlement in a campaign region from one generator.

What is the difference between a fantasy city and a fantasy town name?

Mostly scale and grandeur. Cities tend to carry imposing elements like Spire, Gate, Hold or Citadel, or formal titles such as Free City or City of Bells, while towns and villages use humbler endings like -wick, -brook, -ford and -hollow. Both kinds appear here so you can build a hierarchy of places.

How do I name a city in an elven, dwarven or desert culture?

Match the phonology of that culture. Elven cities favour soft, flowing sounds (Elenthir, Aelindra), dwarven holds use hard consonants and Khaz or Karak style prefixes (Khaz Morguk, Dun Barak), and desert cities borrow Arabic and Persian shapes like Al-Qashir and Dar el-Qadim. The generator includes dedicated runs of each.
