About cat names

Cat names fall into a few dependable families. Human names have taken over the top of the charts, with Luna, Milo, Oliver, Leo, Bella, Charlie and Lucy leading pet-insurance and shelter registrations year after year. Coat names come next: Shadow, Midnight, Onyx and Binx for black cats, Ginger, Marmalade and Cheeto for orange tabbies, Smokey, Earl Grey and Slate for greys, Snowball and Casper for whites, and Oreo, Tux or Penguin for tuxedos. Food names (Mochi, Noodle, Biscuit, Pickles) are popular because they sound as soft and round as the animal.

Cats have also earned a huge cast of famous names: Felix, Tom, Sylvester and Garfield from cartoons; Salem, Binx and Church from film; Crookshanks and Mrs. Norris from Harry Potter; Duchess, Marie, Toulouse and Berlioz from The Aristocats; Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service; and internet royalty like Grumpy, Maru and Lil Bub. Mythology gives you Bastet, Freya and Artemis, all goddesses with cat associations.

A good cat name is short enough to call across the house, has a distinct vowel sound (cats respond best to names ending in a high 'ee' or 'oh' sound), and still feels right when the kitten grows into a fifteen-pound adult. Puns (Chairman Meow, Fuzz Aldrin), historic cats (Trim, Towser), breeds (Manx) and foreign words for cat (Minou, Gatto) round out the list.

How to choose cat names

  • Cats respond best to one- or two-syllable names with a high-pitched ending, so Kitty, Milo, Ziggy or Cleo will be easier to call than Maximilian.
  • Name for the adult, not the kitten: Pipsqueak and Peanut are cute for eight weeks and confusing for fifteen years, unless you want the joke.
  • Match colour loosely rather than literally. Every black cat is offered Shadow; Void, Binx, Onyx or Earl Grey stand out at the vet.
  • If you have more than one cat, pick names with different first sounds (Milo and Luna, not Milo and Millie) so they can tell who you mean.
  • Try the name out loud in three tones: sweet, annoyed and calling from another room. A name that survives all three is a keeper.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most popular cat names right now?

Luna has been the top female cat name for several years, followed by Bella, Lucy, Lily, Chloe and Nala. For males, Oliver, Milo, Leo, Charlie, Max, Simba and Loki lead the lists. Human names now outnumber traditional names like Whiskers and Mittens by a wide margin.

Do cats actually learn their names?

Yes. Studies from the University of Tokyo showed cats distinguish their own name from similar-sounding words, even when a stranger says it. Cats simply choose whether to respond, which is why short names with a distinct final vowel help.

What are good names for a black cat?

Beyond Shadow and Midnight, try Binx, Salem, Onyx, Jet, Ink, Void, Raven, Ebony, Licorice, Coal, Sooty or Bagheera. Witchy and mythological names like Luna, Freya, Hecate and Loki are also popular for black cats.

Can I use these names for a cat character in my book or game?

Yes. Generic and descriptive names are free to use anywhere. Names taken from existing characters (Garfield, Crookshanks, Jiji) are fine for real pets but should be avoided as characters in commercial work.
