Generate D&D town names for every settlement your party passes through: sleepy farming villages, frontier trading posts, fishing ports, dwarven holds, halfling hamlets and haunted mires. Canon Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk towns are included alongside hundreds of original names.

About DnD town names

Most D&D towns are named the way real English villages are: a feature of the land plus a settlement word. Phandalin, Red Larch, Triboar, Daggerford, Greenest and Nightstone all follow the pattern of a short, concrete image (a ford, a larch, a stone) that a traveler could actually see on arrival. The Sword Coast adds a second layer of names that describe what a place was founded for: Helm's Hold, Xantharl's Keep, Noanar's Hold, Dougan's Hole, each tied to a person or a purpose. Official settings also mix in invented words, from the hard Cormyrean sound of Tilverton and Wheloon to the Chultan rhythm of Port Nyanzaru.

The trick is matching the name to who lives there. Human farmland wants plain compounds (Millbrook, Fallowbrook, Oldmarket). Fishing ports want salt and gulls (Saltmarsh, Kelpwick, Herring Cove). Dwarven holds sound struck from stone (Kragmar, Anvilgate), elven villages flow (Sylvanmere, Aelinthal), halfling hamlets are cozy and edible (Butterbarrow, Honeyhollow), and northern towns take a Norse edge like Bryn Shander and Skaldheim. A name with a possessive or a grim noun (Hangman's Gap, Widow's Rest) hands the DM a rumor for free.

This list blends canon towns from the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Eberron and Dragonlance with original names covering the terrains, cultures and moods described above.

How to choose DnD town names

  • Pick by terrain first: fords, bridges and mills for river towns, coves and quays for the coast, holds and keeps for frontier garrisons, then adjust the vocabulary to the local culture.
  • Use one-word names for small villages (Thornbury, Mossbridge) and two-word names for larger towns or cities (Ravens Bluff, Stone Bridge) so players can guess a place's size from the name alone.
  • Seed adventure hooks with names: a village called Widow's Rest or Deadman's Ford invites the question of why, and the answer can be your next session.
  • Keep a region consistent. If one valley has Fallowbrook and Millbrook, a town called Zar'Kal down the road will feel like a different country, which is fine only if it is one.
  • Avoid canon names like Phandalin or Waterdeep in homebrew worlds unless you want players to expect the published lore; borrow the structure and change the parts instead.

Frequently asked questions

What are some official D&D town names?

Well-known ones include Phandalin, Neverwinter and Waterdeep from the Sword Coast, Red Larch and Triboar in the Dessarin Valley, Greenest and Nightstone, Saltmarsh from Greyhawk, Barovia, Vallaki and Krezk from Curse of Strahd, and the Ten-Towns of Icewind Dale such as Bryn Shander, Targos and Easthaven.

How do I name a town in my D&D 5e campaign?

Start with what the town is built on or near (a ford, a mill, a cliff, a mine), add a settlement word if needed (ford, bridge, haven, hollow, hold), and then adjust the sound to fit the local race or culture. A dwarven mining town and a halfling farming village should not sound alike.

What is the difference between a town, village and city name?

Mechanically nothing, but convention helps: villages get humble one-word names (Thornbury, Otterbrook), towns get names with a feature or founder (Kestrel's Watch, Stone Bridge), and cities often get grander or older-sounding names (Silverymoon, Athkatla, Baldur's Gate) that hint at history.

Can I use these names in a published adventure?

The original names here are free to use in homebrew, streams and self-published modules. Canon names like Waterdeep or Sharn belong to Wizards of the Coast settings, so keep those to home games or DMs Guild content that is licensed for the relevant setting.
