Generate D&D city names for the big settlements on your map: walled capitals, trade ports, dwarven undercities, elven tree-cities, desert bazaars and drow metropolises. Canon cities from the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Eberron, Dragonlance and Exandria sit alongside hundreds of original names.
About dnd city names
The most famous D&D cities share a trick: the name is a compound you can picture, and it says what the city is. Waterdeep is a deep-water harbor, Neverwinter has warm rivers, Baldur's Gate was a walled port built by a sea captain, Silverymoon is an elven-influenced city of magic, and Zhentil Keep grew around a fortress. Greyhawk, Irongate and Mithral Hall work the same way. A second school uses invented words with a regional sound: the soft Amnian sound of Athkatla and Murann, the hard Thayan Bezantur, Eberron's clipped Sharn, Wroat and Korth, Dragonlance's Palanthas and Tarsis, and the Underdark's Menzoberranzan and Gracklstugh.
Name your own city by deciding who founded it and what it is for. Human trade capitals take English compounds or a possessive (King's Reach, Queen's Harbor, Ravens Bluff). Dwarven cities sound struck from stone and often carry a title word (Citadel Adbar, Kharn Durak). Elven cities flow with liquid consonants (Silvanost, Aelindor). Desert and southern cities borrow Arabic and Mulhorandi shapes (Calimport, Qasr Ibrahel), northern ones go Norse (Skaldheim, Hrafnvik), and drow and orc cities pile on harsh clusters (Ched Nasad, Mok'Thar). Metropolises also earn epithets (City of Brass, the Free City of Tolm) that towns never do.
This list mixes canon cities from every major setting with original names sorted by culture, terrain and mood.
Tips for choosing a name
- Give a city a descriptive compound or an epithet and give the towns around it plainer names, so players can tell the capital from a village at a glance on the map.
- Match the sound to the founders: Norse for the frozen north, Arabic and Egyptian shapes for deserts, liquid vowels for elves, hard clusters for dwarves, drow and orcs, and English compounds for human heartlands.
- Borrow the structure of canon names rather than the names themselves for homebrew worlds: Waterdeep becomes Brightwater, Baldur's Gate becomes Duke's Landing, and nobody expects published lore.
- Older cities can carry layered names: an elven original, a dwarven nickname and a human corruption (Myth Aranthir, Aranthir, Old Aranth) that hint at history without a lore dump.
- Reserve titles like Citadel, Free City, Port and City of for genuine metropolises, and use them sparingly so each one feels earned.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most famous D&D cities?
Waterdeep, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter, Silverymoon and Luskan on the Sword Coast; Menzoberranzan in the Underdark; Greyhawk from the World of Greyhawk; Sharn and Stormreach in Eberron; Palanthas, Solace and Tarsis in Dragonlance; Sigil in Planescape; Tyr in Dark Sun; and Emon, Vasselheim, Zadash and Rexxentrum from Exandria.
How is a D&D city name different from a town name?
Cities tend to get bigger, more formal names: two-part compounds, possessives honoring a founder, title words like Citadel or Port, or a grand epithet such as the City of Splendors. Towns and villages get shorter, homelier names tied to a single feature like a ford, a mill or a larch tree.
Can I use Waterdeep or Sharn in my own campaign?
For home play, yes, and many DMs run homebrew adventures inside published cities. If you are building an original world or publishing material, use the canon names only as models and invent your own, since Forgotten Realms and Eberron names are Wizards of the Coast property.
How do I name a dwarven, elven or drow city in D&D?
Dwarven cities use hard consonants and stone or metal words (Citadel Adbar, Gauntlgrym, Kharn Durak). Elven cities favor flowing syllables with l, r and th sounds (Silvanost, Qualinost, Aelindor). Drow cities stack harsh, unusual clusters (Menzoberranzan, Ched Nasad, Zar'Kalesh). Pick the culture first and the sound follows.
