Generate desert town names for westerns, post-apocalyptic wastelands, and fantasy caravan routes: Southwestern and Spanish-flavoured names like Agua Fría and Vulture Wash, ghost mining camps like Rhyolite and Bodie Flat, and oasis villages such as Bir Halim and Nine Palms.

About desert town names

Desert towns wear their history in their names. In the American Southwest, Spanish settlers named places for water and terrain (Agua Caliente, hot water; Ojo Seco, dry spring; Cerro Gordo, fat hill), while nineteenth-century miners and railroaders named them for ore, luck, and misery: Goldfield, Chloride, Rhyolite, Last Chance, Poverty Flat, Hell's Half Acre. Wells, springs, washes, and flats appear constantly because they mark where you could water a horse or park a wagon. Some towns were named by railway surveyors as nothing more than a number or a water tank, and a few (Why, Nothing, Zzyzx) got their names as jokes that stuck.

On older caravan routes the pattern is the same in another language: Bir (well), Ain (spring), and Wadi (dry riverbed) start hundreds of real village names across North Africa and Arabia, and oasis towns are often just counted palms or wells, like Nine Palms and Three Wells. Post-apocalyptic fiction inherits the frontier tradition with names taken from whatever the survivors found: the Pumps, Scrapyard, Bunker Springs, Ground Zero.

The list mixes real ghost towns (Bodie, Calico, Rhyolite, Tombstone) with invented ones built the same way. Use real names for historical westerns and invented ones when you need a town with a fresh past.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Name a town for its water source (Wells, Springs, Ojo, Bir) or for what people came for (Silverbell, Borax Junction); this is how nearly all real desert towns got their names.
  • Grim or joking names (Hardluck, Deadman's Wash, Why) fit mining camps and wasteland settlements; Spanish saints and terrain names fit older, more established towns.
  • For post-apocalyptic settings, name towns for the ruins they are built on: Water Tank, Milepost 40, the Pumps.
  • A ghost town needs a boom-era name like Goldfield or Contention that sounds hopeful in hindsight.
  • Keep desert towns to one or two words; long ornate names belong to cities, not to a crossroads with one saloon.

Frequently asked questions

How did real Old West desert towns get their names?

Mostly from water (Coyote Wells, Furnace Creek), minerals (Goldfield, Chloride, Boron), the founder or a railroad official (Ludlow, Baker), a Spanish description of the terrain (Cerro Gordo, Agua Fría), or a miner's mood (Last Chance, Hardluck, Poverty Flat).

Are these real ghost towns?

Many are: Bodie, Calico, Rhyolite, Tombstone, Oatman, Goldfield, and Ballarat are real, mostly abandoned mining towns in California, Nevada, and Arizona. Others such as Vulture Wash, Widow's Well, and Bunker Springs are invented in the same style.

Can I use these town names in my western novel or Fallout-style game?

Yes. Place names cannot be copyrighted, so both the real and invented names here are free to use in commercial fiction, tabletop campaigns, and video games.

What is the difference between a wash, a flat, and a spring in place names?

A wash is a dry riverbed that floods after rain; a flat is a level stretch of ground, often a dry lakebed; a spring is a natural water source. Wells means someone dug for water. Each implies something about why a town was built there.
