About elven city names
Elven cities in fantasy fiction are almost never described as ordinary towns with walls and markets. They are hidden havens (Rivendell, Evereska), cities built into or grown from living trees (Caras Galadhon, Darnassus, Qualinost), gleaming white harbors (Alqualondë, Mithlond, Lothern) or ancient capitals of moon-white towers (Silvermoon, Myth Drannor). Their names reflect that: they lean on words for stars, moon, silver, boughs, harbors and light rather than forts and stones. Tolkien set the template with names that are literal Elvish phrases, such as Caras Galadhon ("city of the trees") and Ost-in-Edhil ("fortress of the elves"), and later settings kept the sound while inventing their own vocabularies.
When you name an elven city, decide what kind of place it is. A capital of high elves suits a polished, multi-syllable Elvish name ending in -ost, -ondë, -ion or -mar (Thalanost, Ondolindë, Vinyamar). A wood-elf settlement hidden in the canopy suits softer English compounds like Silverbough or Starfall Haven, or a Sindarin-style name built on tree words such as Nimbrethil ("white birches"). Harbors and coastal cities often carry -lond or "haven" (Edhellond, Mithlond, the Grey Havens). Adding a descriptive epithet in the common tongue, like the City of a Thousand Lanterns, gives you something for human characters to call it.
The list mixes original Elvish-style names, English poetic names, and canonical cities from Middle-earth, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Warcraft, Warhammer and the Inheritance Cycle so you can pick names that fit your setting's tone.
Tips for choosing a name
- Choose the suffix to match the city type: -ost or -hold for a fortress city, -lond or Haven for a port, -spire or -ion for a high-elf capital of towers, and tree words (bough, glade, -brethil) for a wood-elf city.
- Give the city one Elvish name and one common-tongue name; humans in your world would call Caras Thalion something like Greytree, and that duality adds instant depth.
- Keep the sound consistent within one culture: if your capital is Aelindra, sister cities named Aerandir and Elarion feel related, while a Silverbrook next door reads as a human settlement.
- Skip names that already belong to famous settings (Rivendell, Silvermoon, Qualinost) for published work; use them as reference for structure and pick or adapt an original entry instead.
- Say the name in the context your players will hear it, such as "the road to Ithilost"; elven city names should be smooth and easy to repeat at the table.
Frequently asked questions
What are some famous elven city names in fantasy?
Tolkien gave us Rivendell (Imladris), Caras Galadhon, Gondolin, Nargothrond, Menegroth and Tirion; Forgotten Realms has Myth Drannor, Evereska and Silverymoon; Dragonlance has Qualinost and Silvanost; Warcraft has Silvermoon City, Suramar and Darnassus; Warhammer has Lothern and Tor Yvresse; and Eragon has Ellesméra.
How do you make an elven city name sound authentic?
Use flowing consonants (l, r, n, th, s, v), open vowels and avoid harsh clusters, then finish with a place-name suffix like -ost (fortress), -lond (haven), -ion, -mar or -ien. Combining a light or nature root with one of those endings, such as Ithil (moon) + -ost = Ithilost, produces names that feel Elvish without copying Tolkien directly.
Can I use these elven city names in a published book or game?
The original invented names and English poetic names are free to use commercially. Canonical cities from Middle-earth, Forgotten Realms, Warcraft, Warhammer and other franchises are included for reference and inspiration; those belong to their rights holders, so keep them to home campaigns or adapt them into something new.
What is the difference between an elven city and an elven town name?
Cities usually carry grander, more formal names, often an Elvish word plus an epithet (Thalanost, the Argent Spires), while towns and villages use humbler compounds tied to a local feature such as Willowmist, Fernbrook or Silverbrook. Try the elven town name generator for smaller settlements and outposts.
