Generate dwarven city names in three authentic styles: guttural Khuzdul-flavored names like Karak Azgal and Zirak-dûm, plain English hold names like Ironhearth and Deepstone Hall, and canonical dwarf cities from Tolkien, Warhammer, Warcraft and D&D.

About dwarven city names

Dwarven cities are almost never 'cities' in the human sense. They are holds, halls, delvings and gates carved into a mountain, and their names reflect that. Tolkien set the template with Khazad-dûm ('Dwarf-mansion') and its Sindarin twin Moria, plus Erebor, Belegost ('great fortress') and Nogrod ('hollow dwelling'). Warhammer's dwarfs added the most imitated pattern in the genre: Karak (fortress) or Barak (harbour) followed by a descriptor, as in Karak Kadrin, Karak Azul and Karaz-a-Karak, 'the Pinnacle of Fortresses'. Warcraft went the other way with plain, punchy English: Ironforge, Grim Batol, Aerie Peak.

The entries above mix all three approaches. Khuzdul-flavored names use Tolkien's real roots: -dûm for mansion or hall, zâram for lake, zirak for spike, baraz for red, kheled for glass, azan for dim. Karak- and Kazad- names borrow the Warhammer construction, and 'Dun' names echo the Gaelic word for fort that Warcraft used for Dun Morogh. English hold names fuse a material or feature with hold, vault, deep, hearth or holm.

When naming a dwarf city for your own setting, decide first what it is famous for. A mining hold might be Silverdeep or Karak Azgal (hoard-fortress); a river-port would be a Barak; a capital carries a grander, longer name like Halls of the Deep King. The name should tell a traveller what they will find behind the gate.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Choose one linguistic style per region: Khuzdul-flavored (-dûm, Karak) for ancient holds, plain English compounds (Ironhearth) for younger settlements or frontier outposts.
  • Use a shared prefix like Karak or Dun across several holds in the same kingdom so the map instantly reads as dwarven territory.
  • Name the city after what is mined or forged there (Silverdeep, Coalhearth, Runedeep) so the economy is baked into the name.
  • Give a fallen or ruined hold a second, grimmer name given by outsiders, the way Khazad-dûm became Moria after Durin's Bane.
  • For a capital, go longer and more formal (Halls of the Deep King, Karaz-a-Karak); keep outposts to one blunt compound word.

Frequently asked questions

What are famous dwarven cities in fantasy?

The best known are Tolkien's Khazad-dûm (Moria), Erebor, Belegost and Nogrod; Warhammer's Karaz-a-Karak and Karak Eight Peaks; Warcraft's Ironforge and Grim Batol; D&D's Mithral Hall, Citadel Adbar and Gauntlgrym; and Dragon Age's Orzammar.

What does 'Karak' mean in dwarven names?

In Warhammer's Khazalid language, Karak means fortress or hold, Barak means harbour and Zhuf means river. Karak Kadrin is roughly 'Fortress of the Pass', and Karaz-a-Karak means 'Pinnacle of Fortresses'.

How do I make a dwarven city name sound authentic?

Use hard consonants (K, Z, G, D, R), keep to two or three syllables per element, and build from meaningful roots such as -dûm (hall), zâram (lake), or Iron-, Deep-, Stone- in English. Avoid soft, flowing sounds that read as elvish.

Can I use these city names in a published campaign setting?

The original English and Khuzdul-flavored names are free to use. Canon locations such as Ironforge, Karak Kadrin or Mithral Hall belong to their franchises and should stay in home games or fan works.
