Generate fantasy village names that sound lived-in: rustic English-style hamlets like Thistlecombe and Sheepwash, quirky halfling settlements, elvish glades, dwarven mining camps and spooky marsh villages. Built for D&D, worldbuilding and fantasy fiction.
About fantasy village names
A village name should be smaller than a town name. Towns get grand compounds and royal charters; villages get named after whatever was there when the first three families arrived: a ford, a mill, a mire, a sheep-wash, a gallows or an old oak. Real English place names are the model most fantasy maps lean on, and their building blocks are worth knowing: -ford and -bridge for crossings, -mere and -well for water, -combe and -dale for valleys, -by, -thorpe and -thwaite for Norse-settled farms, -wick and -cote for outlying dairy or sheep steadings, and Bottom, Green, Hollow and Cross for the spot where the lane widens out. Add a possessive (Hobbin's End, Fiddler's Reach) and you get the sense that someone remembered is buried there.
This list mixes several registers so the map does not feel uniform. There are plain rural hamlets (Millbrook, Brackenthorpe), double-barrelled parishes in the Much Snoring and Stoke-under-Hag tradition, halfling-flavoured names with a smile in them, elvish glades, dwarven mining and smelting camps, fishing villages on the coast, fen and marsh settlements, and a darker run of barrow and gallows names for the place the party should not have stopped.
Use the plainer names for the farming heartland near your capital and save the strange ones for the frontier.
Tips for choosing a name
- Name villages after a feature, not a virtue. Sheepwash, Eelsford and Kilnbrook tell players what the place does; Glory Hollow tells them nothing.
- Cluster suffixes by region. If one valley is full of -thwaite and -by names and the next is all -combe and -cote, your map quietly shows two different settler cultures without a line of exposition.
- Keep most names to one or two words. A village is small; a three-word name like Ashby-under-Tor is fine for flavour, but if every hamlet has one the map starts to read like a railway timetable.
- Match the mood to the adventure. Drowsy, honeyed names (Honeymere, Sleepy Fold) make the eventual horror village (Gallowsmere, Bonehithe) land harder by contrast.
- Say the name aloud as a local would and shorten it. Real villagers clip names over centuries, so Hobbin's End becomes Hobbinsend and that worn-down form often sounds more authentic.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a fantasy village name and a fantasy town name?
Scale and ambition. Town and city names tend toward grand or fortified compounds (Ironhold, Kingsport, Stormgate), while village names are homely and descriptive, built from fords, mills, greens, hollows and farms. A good rule is that a village is named by its neighbours, a city by its rulers.
What do suffixes like -thorpe, -by, -wick and -combe mean?
They are real Old English and Old Norse settlement words: -by and -thorpe are Norse for farmstead and outlying hamlet, -thwaite is a forest clearing, -wick is a dairy or specialised farm, -cote a cottage or shelter, -combe a short valley, -mere a lake and -hithe a landing place. Using them consistently makes invented names feel as if they have a history.
Can I use these names for D&D or Pathfinder villages?
Yes. The list was written with tabletop use in mind: the rustic names suit starting villages and farmland, the halfling and elvish names fit specific ancestries, the dwarven camp names work for mining outposts, and the marsh, barrow and gallows names are ready-made for a horror one-shot.
How many villages should a fantasy region have?
Far more than towns. A medieval kingdom might have one market town for every ten to twenty villages, so for a regional map sketch three or four towns and a dozen or more hamlets around them. You do not need to detail each one; a name and one memorable feature is enough until the party visits.
