Naruto Village Name Generator
Hidden villages, shinobi lands and towns for your OC
Generate Naruto-style hidden village names: the canon Five Great Nations and minor villages, original Xgakure names with English translations, new Lands, and civilian towns for fan fiction, roleplay and OC backstories.
About Naruto village names
Every shinobi village in Naruto follows the same naming formula. The Japanese name is a nature word plus gakure (from kakureru, to hide), so Konohagakure is the village hidden in the leaves, Sunagakure in the sand, Kirigakure in the mist, Kumogakure in the clouds and Iwagakure in the stone. Minor villages keep the pattern: Amegakure (rain), Otogakure (sound), Takigakure (waterfall), Kusagakure (grass), Yugakure (hot water), Hoshigakure (stars) and the destroyed Uzushiogakure (whirling tides). The formal name adds no Sato (village), and English translations read as Hidden Leaf Village or Village Hidden in the Mist.
The village usually sits inside a Land named for a different but related element: Konoha in the Land of Fire, Suna in the Land of Wind, Kiri in the Land of Water, Kumo in the Land of Lightning, Iwa in the Land of Earth. An original village feels canon when you keep that split, pick a single short nature word for the village and a broader element or feature for the country, and give the village a Kage title only if it is one of the great powers.
This list mixes canon villages with their translations, new Xgakure names built from real Japanese words, English-style Hidden X Village names, new Lands, and civilian towns in the mold of Tanzaku Town for the places between missions.
How to choose Naruto village names
- Build an original village from one Japanese nature word plus gakure: hai (ash) gives Haigakure, kemuri (smoke) gives Kemurigakure, koori (ice) gives Koorigakure. Keep the word to one or two syllables so it sounds like Suna or Kiri rather than a mouthful.
- Give the village a different element from its Land. Canon pairs are Leaf/Fire, Sand/Wind, Mist/Water, Cloud/Lightning, Stone/Earth, so Ash/Volcanoes or Coral/Tides follows the same logic.
- Only the Five Great Nations have a Kage. A minor village is led by a village head or clan leader, which is also a good way to explain why your OC's home is small and vulnerable.
- For fan fiction, decide the village's trade and geography first: a waterfall village is hard to reach, a sound village is new and artificial, a rain village is industrial and wet. The name should match that picture.
- Civilian stops like Tanzaku Town are named like ordinary Japanese towns, not with gakure, so use the town names in the list for gambling towns, ports and hot spring resorts.
Frequently asked questions
What does gakure mean in Naruto village names?
Gakure comes from the Japanese verb kakureru, to hide. Konohagakure literally means hidden in the leaves, Sunagakure hidden in the sand, and so on. The full title adds no Sato (village), which is why English translations read as Village Hidden in the Leaves or Hidden Leaf Village.
What are all the canon hidden villages in Naruto?
The five great villages are Konohagakure (Leaf), Sunagakure (Sand), Kirigakure (Mist), Kumogakure (Cloud) and Iwagakure (Stone). Minor and former villages include Amegakure (Rain), Otogakure (Sound), Kusagakure (Grass), Takigakure (Waterfall), Yugakure (Hot Water), Shimogakure (Frost), Hoshigakure (Star), Uzushiogakure (Whirlpool), Yukigakure (Snow), Tsukigakure (Moon), Tanigakure (Valley), Soragakure (Sky), Ishigakure (Rock) and Kagigakure (Lock). All of them are in this list.
How do I make an original village sound like it belongs in Naruto?
Use a short Japanese nature word plus gakure, give the surrounding Land a related but different element, and decide whether it is a great village with a Kage or a minor one. Names like Haigakure in the Land of Volcanoes or Sangogakure in the Land of Tides follow the canon pattern closely.
Can I use these names for a Naruto OC, roleplay server or fanfic?
Yes. The original villages, Lands and towns on this page are free to use in fan fiction, Discord roleplay, D&D shinobi campaigns and OC profiles. The canon villages are included for reference and belong to the series.
