Naming a World of Warcraft character is harder than it looks because the game has 20 years of taken names and a strict format: one word, 2 to 12 letters, no spaces or numbers, and unique on your realm. The names that survive that filter and still feel like they belong in Azeroth all borrow the sound Blizzard gave each race. Human names are medieval European (Garrick, Rosalind), night elf names flow with soft L and S sounds (Kaelith, Merisiel), blood elf names are bright and end in -as, -ith, or -iel (Thalorin, Aurelith), and orc names crash together hard consonants (Grommok, Durgash).

Trolls put an apostrophe after the first syllable (Rak'jin, Zul'mara), draenei double their vowels (Velaana, Toraam), dwarves sound Norse and Scottish (Ragnvald, Morag), tauren draw on Native American-inspired sounds (Ohanzee, Halona), and Forsaken keep the gothic Lordaeron names they died with (Mortimer, Isadora). Gnomes and goblins get bouncy, mechanical first names (Fizzwick, Zazzik), worgen sound Victorian (Cornelius, Genevieve), pandaren use short Chinese-inspired names, and vulpera and Dracthyr each have their own newer flavor.

Surnames like Sunweaver, Ironbelly, or Runetotem cannot be used in-game but are worth choosing anyway; roleplayers put them in their TRP3 profile, and many players use the surname alone as their character name when the first name is taken.
