Viking Town Name Generator

Ordinary Viking towns and farmsteads had humbler names than the great trading cities, and the pattern is easiest to see in the places Norse settlers named across the North Atlantic. In England's Danelaw the Norse left hundreds of -by (farm or village: Grimsby, Whitby, Derby), -thorpe (outlying hamlet: Scunthorpe, Mablethorpe), -toft (homestead plot: Lowestoft, Langtoft), and -thwaite (clearing: Braithwaite, Slaithwaite) names, very often with a Norse personal name in front, so Grimsby is Grim's farm and Ormsby is Orm's farm. In Iceland the same people used -staðir (steads), -holt (wood), -vík (bay), -nes (headland), -dalur (valley), and -höfn (harbour), giving Egilsstaðir, Reykholt, Húsavík, and Höfn. In the Faroes you find Kirkjubøur and Klaksvík; in Greenland Brattahlíð and Herjolfsnes; and even Normandy kept Norse traces in names like Le Torp, Houlgate, and Yvetot.

A good Viking town name therefore usually has two parts: who founded it or what is there (Ketil, Ulf, Bjørn, kirk for church, sand, lund for grove) plus what kind of place it is (-by, -thorpe, -toft, -stad, -holt, -vik, -nes). Real names were practical rather than dramatic, and that is what makes them feel authentic; Ironforge and Dragonspire belong to Warcraft, not to the sagas.

The list mixes real Danelaw, Icelandic, Faroese, Greenlandic, and Norman-Norse towns with original names built from the same elements, so a Viking-era novel, a longship raiding campaign, or a Norse fantasy hex map gets settlements that sound genuinely lived-in.
