About hamlet names

A hamlet is the smallest named place on a map: a handful of houses, usually without a church, pub or shop, that grew up around a crossroads, a mill, a farm, a ford or a bridge. Its name almost always says so. Real hamlets are called things like Bridge Foot, Mill Race End, Cold Harbour, Four Lanes End, Chapel Row and Gallows Corner because that is all there was to describe, and the best invented names keep that plainness.

Region changes the kit. Lowland England uses Green, End, Bottom, Row, Corner, Hatch and Cross; the northern fells use Norse Thwaite, Gill, Beck, Garth and Foot (Seathwaite, Stang End, Grisedale Bridge); Cornwall keeps Tre-, Pol- and Pen- with a Churchtown or Cross added; Wales builds from Pen, Cwm, Nant, Bryn and Llan; the Highlands have crofting townships in Gaelic such as Achnahaird and Clachan Bheag; Ireland names townlands with Bally-, Kil-, Drum- and Knock-; and American backwoods produced wry names like Possum Trot, Hardscrabble and Burnt Cabins.

This list mixes all of these with fantasy-neutral inventions (Ashenmere, Cinderhollow, Halfmoon Ford) that fit a made-up map without sounding like a capital city. Choose by region and by what the place actually is.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Name the hamlet after the one thing that is there: a ford, a mill, a chapel, a kiln, a gallows, a crossroads. Bridge Foot and Lime Kiln Corner are believable; Dragonspire is a city name.
  • Match the suffix to the region of your map: Green, End and Bottom for lowland England, Thwaite, Gill and Foot for the fells, Cross or Churchtown for Cornwall, Uchaf and Isaf (upper and lower) for Wales, Bally- and Drum- for Ireland.
  • Hamlets often borrow the parish name with a qualifier, so a village called Westcote can have Nether Westcote and Church Westcote as its hamlets; use this to make a map feel settled.
  • For comic or cosy fiction, lean into real English oddities like Little Snoring, Pease Pottage and Pudding Norton; for grim or remote settings, a bare Norse or Gaelic single word (Ulpha, Boot, Annat) does more with less.
  • If your hamlet is in a fantasy world, avoid apostrophes and invented consonant clusters; Halfmoon Ford or Wolfshead Cross reads as a real place while Zhar'Kel reads as a dungeon.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a hamlet and a village?

In British usage a village traditionally has a parish church and often a pub, shop or green, while a hamlet is a smaller cluster of houses without a church of its own, usually part of a neighbouring parish. In practice a hamlet might be a farm, a mill, a crossroads inn and a few cottages, which is why so many are named after exactly those features.

How are real hamlets named?

Most describe a feature (Bridge Foot, Well Bottom, Chapel Row), a position relative to a bigger place (Nether Wick, Far Cotton, Upper Sidling), the family or trade that lived there (Cobblers Cross, Tinker's Row) or the landscape in the local language, such as Norse thwaite and gill in Cumbria, Cornish tre and pol, Welsh cwm and pen, Gaelic achadh and clachan, or Irish bally and kil.

Can I use these hamlet names in a D&D campaign or novel?

Yes. Place names are free to use, and hamlets are ideal for a campaign's starting settlement or a novel's quiet backdrop because they sound humble and specific. Some names here coincide with real tiny places, which only adds to the realism; for a secondary world pick the invented ones like Ashenmere, Thornfold or Greywater Crossing.

What makes a fantasy hamlet name sound believable?

Keep it short, concrete and slightly worn: one or two plain English words built from a landscape feature and a settlement word (Cinderhollow, Saltwick, Halfmoon Ford). Avoid grand or abstract vocabulary, apostrophes and exotic consonant clusters, and let the name hint at why anyone settled there, such as a ford, a mill or a shelter from the wind.
