About Pokemon town names
Pokemon towns are named by a rule, and each region has a different one. Kanto uses colors (Viridian, Cerulean, Fuchsia, Cinnabar). Johto uses plants and dyes (Azalea, Goldenrod, Mahogany, Ecruteak from 'ecru' and 'teak'). Hoenn and Sinnoh smash two words into a portmanteau that describes the place: Littleroot, Fallarbor, Verdanturf, Sootopolis, Snowpoint, Hearthome. Unova goes Latin and cloud-flavored (Accumula, Striaton, Nimbasa, Opelucid); Kalos takes French botanical and perfume words (Coumarine, Camphrier, Laverre); Alola is Hawaiian (Hau'oli, Heahea, Konikoni); Galar is English village geography (Wedgehurst, Hulbury, Stow-on-Side); and Paldea is Spanish (Mesagoza, Cascarrafa, Porto Marinada).
This list includes the canon towns and cities of all nine main regions so you can see what already exists, plus originals built on those same rules, so a fan region feels like it was built by Game Freak rather than assembled from fantasy town names. The portmanteau style is the most versatile for a fakemon project because every name explains its own town: Lavaridge is on a ridge near lava, Pacifidlog is a floating log town, and players understand that instantly on the town map.
Pick one rule for your whole region and stick to it. Mixing Kanto colors with Galar villages is the fastest way to make a fan map feel inconsistent.
How to choose Pokemon town names
- Choose a single naming theme for your region first (colors, plants, gems, weather, one real-world language) and name every town inside it; the theme is what makes the region feel authentic.
- Use 'Town' for the small early-route places with no gym and 'City' for gym towns and hubs, the way the games do, and save 'Village' and 'Island' for the one or two outliers.
- For portmanteau names, combine a feature of the place with a landform word: Frostpine, Mistvale, Tideport. Say it aloud and make sure it doesn't collapse into an existing word.
- Keep names to about twelve characters so they fit on the town map and in the 'Welcome to X' sign text without wrapping.
- If you're writing fan fiction set in an existing region, use the canon names from this list exactly; readers notice a misspelled Ecruteak or Sootopolis immediately.

Are the canon Pokemon town names included?
Yes. The list includes every town, city and village from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar and Paldea, along with Cinnabar Island, Black City, White Forest, Hisui's Jubilife Village and Kitakami's Mossui Town, so you can reference them or avoid duplicating them. Side areas such as the Sevii Islands and Sinnoh's Battle Zone are left out. The rest of the list is original names.
How do I name towns for a fan-made or ROM hack region?
Pick the real-world region your map is based on and choose a theme that fits it, the way Galar uses British village names and Paldea uses Spanish. Then write a short descriptive name for each town using that theme, keep the Town/City distinction, and make sure no two names share the same first syllable.
Why do so many Pokemon towns end in Town or City?
The suffix tells players the town's role at a glance: Towns are small, usually gymless stops, while Cities have gyms, shops and major story events. A few places break the pattern on purpose, like Cinnabar Island, Tapu Village or the Galar and Paldea names that drop the suffix entirely.
