Steampunk City Name Generator

Steampunk cities work best when they sound like real Victorian industrial towns with the machinery turned up. Real British place names are built from a root and a suffix that once meant something concrete: -ford (river crossing), -bridge, -bury or -borough (fortified town), -wick (trading place), -mouth (river mouth), -holme (island), -stead (settlement), -combe (valley) and -mere (lake). Bolt an industrial root onto one of these (Cogsford, Rivetham, Sootcastle, Ironmouth) and the name immediately feels like it has been on a map for three centuries.

The genre's other great source is the age itself. Real Victorian engineers and scientists make natural city or district names: Brunel, Babbage, Lovelace, Bessemer, Faraday, Stephenson, Telford. Actual industrial London districts such as Battersea, Deptford, Wapping and Shoreditch can be reused with a mechanical twist (Battersea Boiler, Deptford Steamyard), and alternate-history capitals like New Albion, Albertopolis and Novo Londinium tell readers instantly that history took a different turn. Aetheric and aeronautical words (Aetherport, Zeppelinhaven, Airdock) mark cities built around airship travel.

Go easy on the obvious. One city called Brassburg is atmospheric; ten cities that all begin with Brass-, Gear- or Steam- read like a template. Mix compound names, honorific names, real-district remixes and a few plain grim ones like Grimshaw or Fogmoor, and your world will feel populated rather than generated.
