Beach Town Name Generator

Real beach towns fall into a few recognizable families. On the American East Coast, Victorian-era railway resorts took hopeful compound names such as Seabright, Ocean Grove, Point Pleasant, Spring Lake and Wildwood, while older Cape and Maine towns kept English parish names (Falmouth, Chatham, Truro, Scarborough) or Algonquian ones (Nantucket, Montauk, Manasquan, Misquamicut). Southern coasts have Keys, Inlets and Islands: Siesta Key, Murrells Inlet, Tybee Island. The Pacific coast is heavily Spanish: San Clemente, Del Mar, Encinitas, Playa del Rey, plus mission-era saints and Costa, Punta, Bahía and Cabo forms.

Elsewhere the pattern shifts. British and Irish resorts are old fishing harbours (Padstow, Whitby, Salcombe, Kinsale) that happen to have sand; Australian surf towns pair an English surname or feature with Bay or Heads (Byron Bay, Noosa Heads); Iberian and French Atlantic surf towns are old fishing ports like Nazaré, Ericeira and Hossegor. Wildlife and trade names (Pelican Landing, Oyster Point, Whalers Rest, Netmenders Cove) suit any working waterfront that later found tourists.

A convincing fictional beach town name should tell you what era it was named in and by whom: a 1890s railway developer, a Spanish missionary, a fishing community or a Wampanoag place name that survived. Choose the layer first and the name almost writes itself.
