Generate fantasy town names for D&D campaigns, novels and worldbuilding maps: English-style compounds like Thornwick and Ravenmoor, possessive names like Miller's Crossing, elvish, dwarven, Norse and desert settlements, plus eerie places like Hag's Hollow and Plague Hollow.

About fantasy town names

Most fantasy town names follow the same recipe as real English villages: a feature of the landscape or the name of a founder, joined to a word for the kind of settlement. Tolkien's Bree, Bywater and Hobbiton, D&D's Phandalin and Greenest, and nearly every town on a published campaign map are built this way. The endings do quiet work. A -ford or -bridge town sits on a river crossing, -wick and -haven suggest trade or a harbour, -moor and -fen mean wet, lonely country, and -hollow, -dale and -glen put the place in a valley. Possessive names like Miller's Crossing or Hangman's Rest imply a story about whoever the place is named for.

The names here cover the spread a game master or novelist actually needs: plain English-style compounds for the heartland, market towns with prefixes like Market, Chipping and Saint, bleak outposts like Plague Hollow and Gallows Hill, and settlements with elvish, dwarven, Norse, Slavic, desert and far-eastern flavours for the edges of the map where another culture lives.

When you pick one, think about who founded the town and what it is for. A fishing village, a mining camp and a pilgrim town should not sound alike. Two or three syllables, easy to shout across a market square, is the sweet spot.

How to choose fantasy town names

  • Match the ending to the terrain: -ford and -bridge for river towns, -haven, -wick and Port for harbours, -moor and -fen for lonely marshland, -hollow and -glen for valleys, and Pass or Reach for mountain settlements.
  • Use possessive names (Cooper's Bend, Widow's Watch) when you want players to ask who the place is named after; it gives you a free plot hook.
  • Keep a region consistent. If the heartland uses English-style names, give the elvish or Norse settlements their own sound so the border is obvious on the map and in conversation.
  • Use prefixes to show status and history: Great and Little for paired villages, Old and New for a town that moved, Saint for a pilgrim site, Market or Chipping for a trading town.
  • Reserve the sinister names (Hag's Hollow, Blighted Mill, Sorrow's End) for places that have earned them; a map full of ominous towns makes none of them feel dangerous.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a fantasy town name sound realistic?

Build it the way real places were named: a landscape feature, crop, animal or founder plus a settlement word such as -ford, -wick, -bury, -hollow or -haven. Then keep it short. Thornwick and Ashenford sound like places people have lived for centuries; a four-word name with an apostrophe usually does not.

Are these names suitable for a D&D campaign?

Yes. The list is written in the same style as published Forgotten Realms and homebrew towns, with a mix of friendly starter villages, trading ports, frontier outposts and haunted places, plus elvish, dwarven and Norse-flavoured settlements for other regions of your world.

What is the difference between a town, village and city name in fantasy?

Villages and small towns usually carry humble compound names tied to the land (Millbrook, Oakhollow). Larger towns pick up prefixes that show importance, like Market, Kings or Saint. Cities tend to have older, grander or single-word names (Aventry, Thalassar) because they outgrew their descriptive origins.

Can I use these town names in a published book or game?

Yes. The names here are original or follow generic real-world naming patterns, so they are free to use. Just avoid lifting well-known canon towns from a specific franchise into a commercial project.
