About southern town names

Southern town names have a flavour you can hear from a mile off, and it comes from four distinct sources. First are Native American words, mostly Muskogean and Cherokee, that survive in places like Tallapoosa, Loachapoka, Bogue Chitto (Choctaw for "big creek"), Ochlocknee and Tishomingo. Second are the founding-family names with a suffix tacked on — -ville, -boro, -ton and -burg — which give you Bennettsville, Scottsboro, Sandersville and Cedartown. Third are the aspirational names settlers chose after the Revolution: Prosperity, Enterprise, Liberty, plus a wave of classical borrowings such as Sparta, Athens, Rome, Cairo and Kosciusko. Fourth, and most beloved, are the plainspoken descriptive names — Six Mile, Ninety Six, Due West, Round O, Fair Play, Bald Knob — and the frankly comic ones like Bucksnort, Toad Suck, Bug Tussle and Lick Skillet, nearly all of which are real.

That is why so many good Southern town names are a single word: Sweetgum, Chunky, Opp, Soso, Ty Ty. Two-word names usually pair a tree or crop with a landform — Hickory Flat, Cotton Plant, Persimmon Gap, Palmetto Bluff — because pine, dogwood, sweetgum, magnolia and cotton were the landscape people saw every day.

Most of the names here are real, small, and rarely used in fiction, so they read as authentic without dragging in associations the way Savannah or Nashville would. Use them for a Southern Gothic novel, a country song, a Friday-night-lights sports story or a Fallout-style map of the Deep South.

Tips for choosing a name

  • One-word names sound most authentic for the smallest towns; save the two-word landform names (X Bluff, X Springs, X Crossroads) for county seats and crossroads settlements.
  • Add a hint of dialect through spelling and stress: Cairo is pronounced KAY-ro in Georgia, Vienna is VY-enna, and your characters should say it the local way.
  • For a fictional county seat, take a real-sounding surname and add -ville or -boro (Hurtsboro, Ellaville), then name the county for someone else entirely, as real Southern counties do.
  • Comic names like Bugscuffle and Frog Level are real and great for colour, but use one per story at most or the setting tips into parody.
  • Pair the town with a landmark from the same list — Chunky Creek, Bogue Homa, Paint Rock — to make the geography feel connected.

Frequently asked questions

Where do Southern town names come from?

Mostly from four sources: Choctaw, Creek and Cherokee words (Tallapoosa, Bogue Chitto), founders' surnames with -ville or -boro added, aspirational or classical names chosen after the Revolution (Prosperity, Sparta), and blunt descriptive names for the landscape (Six Mile, Bald Knob).

Are places like Toad Suck and Bug Tussle real?

Yes. Toad Suck is in Arkansas, Bug Tussle in Alabama, Bucksnort in Tennessee, Hot Coffee in Mississippi and Ninety Six in South Carolina. The South has an unusually rich tradition of humorous, plainspoken place names, most of them with a folk story attached.

Can I use a real small town's name for a fictional town?

Legally yes — place names are not protected — but many authors invent a name or use a real one from a different state so local readers do not assume the story is about their neighbours. Combining two real elements (Sweetwater Landing, Persimmon Gap) is a safe middle path.

What makes a town name sound Southern rather than generic American?

Muskogean roots, plants like magnolia, sweetgum, dogwood and cotton, words like bluff, hollow, bottom, gap and crossroads, and the willingness to name a whole town after a joke or a single event. Northern towns lean on -field, -ford and English county names instead.
