English Town Name Generator

English town names are built from a surprisingly small kit of Old English, Norse, Celtic and Norman parts, which is why an invented one can sound completely real. The commonest pattern is a person or feature plus a settlement word: -ton (farmstead), -ham (homestead), -bury (fortified place), -ford, -wick, -worth, -stead and -ley (clearing). Add -ing and you get 'the people of': Hastings, Reading, and here Wimmington or Tellingham Wold. In the old Danelaw, from Yorkshire down to Leicestershire, Norse gave -by, -thorpe, -thwaite, -toft, -beck and -gill, so Thorkelby and Ulfsthwaite read northern, while Cornwall keeps Brittonic Tre-, Pen-, Pol- and Lan-.

The second layer is the affix that tells two places apart. Latin church scribes left Magna and Parva, Regis (the king's), Abbas (the abbot's) and Episcopi (the bishop's). Norman lords left their surnames: Ferrers, Bassett, Mallet, Peverell, Courtenay. Everyday English added Great, Little, Upper, Nether, Market, Chipping and the wonderful hyphenated forms: -on-the-Wold, -under-Edge, -juxta-Mare, -next-the-Sea.

This list mixes plain single-word villages with double-barrelled parishes, Norse dales, Cornish hamlets and a few gently comic names in the Tolpuddle and Nether Wallop tradition. Pick one that matches the region and period of your story, then say it as a local would, swallowing syllables, before you commit.
