Generate kingdom names built the way real ones are: a root word plus a land suffix (-ia, -land, -mark, -reach), a ruling house or founder, a defining river or mountain, or a formal style like the Grand Duchy of Velmoor.
About kingdom names
Real kingdom names are almost never invented from nothing. They come from a people (England is the land of the Angles, France the land of the Franks), a geographic feature (Norway is the north way, Montenegro the black mountain), a founder or ruling house (the Kingdom of Saud), or a Latinized version of any of those with an -ia tacked on (Austria, Bulgaria, Prussia). Fantasy kingdoms that feel lived-in copy this. Westeros has the Riverlands, the Reach and the Stormlands, all plainly descriptive; Tolkien's Gondor and Rohan derive from invented languages that describe stone-land and horse-country.
That gives you a practical toolkit. Take a root with the right sound and add a nation suffix: -ia and -ora for classical or elegant realms (Valoria, Aurelia), -mark and -march for frontier lands (Vaelmark, Eastmarch), -gard, -heim and -holm for northern kingdoms (Tyrgard, Vinterheim, Skarholm), -reach, -hold and -wold for English-flavored ones (Ebonreach, Ironhold, Redwold). Then decide whether the name lives on the map alone (Caldoria) or wears its full formal style on treaties and banners: the Grand Duchy of Velmoor, the High Kingdom of Erevast, the Kingdom of Ash and Amber.
The list below mixes bare place-names, formal styles, throne names and descriptive kingdoms so you can pick one register or use several across the same map. Neighboring realms with different naming patterns immediately suggest different cultures and histories.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick a suffix family per culture and stay consistent: -ia and -ora for one region, -gard and -heim for its northern neighbor, so the map itself tells a story.
- Give the kingdom both a short map name and a formal style (Velmoor / the Grand Duchy of Velmoor). Characters use the short one, heralds and treaties use the long one.
- Name at least one kingdom after its ruling house or founder; it instantly implies dynasty politics and a history you can mine later.
- Descriptive names like the Riverlands or the Kingdom of Frost and Fir make geography memorable, but use only one or two per map or they start to feel like a theme park.
- Say the name aloud with 'the King of' in front of it. If it stumbles or rhymes awkwardly, change the ending.
Frequently asked questions
How do real kingdoms get their names?
Most are named for the people who live there (England, France, Scotland), a landmark or direction (Norway, Montenegro), or a founding dynasty (Saudi Arabia). Latin scholars later added -ia to many of them, which is why so many kingdom names end that way and why fantasy borrows the habit.
What's the difference between a kingdom, an empire, a duchy and a principality?
A kingdom is ruled by a king or queen; an empire is a larger state ruling several peoples or kingdoms under an emperor; a duchy or grand duchy is ruled by a duke and usually owes allegiance to a crown; a principality is ruled by a prince. Using the right style adds realism to your world's political map.
Should a fantasy kingdom name end in -ia?
It's the most familiar option and always sounds regal, but a whole map of -ia names blurs together. Mix in -mark, -reach, -gard, -holm and descriptive names like the Reach or the Salt Kingdom to give each realm a distinct cultural flavor.
Can I use these kingdom names in my novel or game?
Yes, they're free for commercial and personal use. Just search the name before publishing so you don't accidentally collide with a well-known existing setting.
