Western Town Name Generator

Real western towns were named in a hurry by the people who built them, and the names show it. Mining camps took their names from what the diggers found or failed to find (Goldfield, Poverty Flat, Total Wreck), cattle towns from the rivers and forts they grew beside (Fort Worth, Ogallala, Ellsworth), and railroad stops from whatever the survey crew wrote on the map that week. Spanish and Mexican settlements across Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California kept older names like Socorro, Ojo Caliente and Las Cruces, which give a region an entirely different sound from the Anglo camps further north.

The most convincing invented names follow the same logic. A landmark word (creek, gulch, mesa, flats, wells, springs, crossing, bend, junction) attached to a color, animal, plant or grim event gives you Rattlesnake Gulch, Coyote Wells or Hangman's Hollow. Optimistic founders produced Providence, Concordia and Bonanza; disappointed ones gave us Humbug Creek and Gouge Eye. Forts and camps sound official and military, while a possessive surname (Harlan's Crossing, Bishop's Landing) implies a founder with a story.
