Accessibility
A name generator should work for everyone who needs a name. This page says what we aim for, where we know we fall short, and how to tell us about a problem.
What we aim for
Our target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. We have not had the site independently audited, so we do not claim full conformance. When we build or change a page we check it with a keyboard alone, with automated accessibility checkers and at browser zoom up to 400%.
What we have built in
- Every page has a "Skip to content" link and a single main heading.
- The generator works from the keyboard: all controls are real buttons and links with visible focus, and new batches, copies and saves are announced to screen readers.
- Pages are plain HTML that loads and reads without waiting for scripts, and the full name list is on the page as text.
- Text and controls are designed to AA contrast, and the layout reflows on small screens and at high zoom without sideways scrolling.
- Animations are short, and they are switched off when your system asks for reduced motion.
- Windows High Contrast and other forced-colour modes are supported.
- Names written in Chinese, Japanese or Korean script are marked with their language so they are read with the right voice.
Limits we know about
- Advertising is supplied by third parties through Mediavine. We choose placements that stay out of the way of the generator, but we do not control the content of individual ads, and some may not meet the same standard as the rest of the page.
- The cookie and privacy-choices tool is provided by our advertising partner. If you cannot use it, email us and we will help.
- The largest category pages list several hundred generators, which makes for a long page with a screen reader. The search page and the A to Z index are quicker routes.
- Names from fictional languages and from languages written in other scripts may be mispronounced by speech software.
Report a problem
Email [email protected] with the page address, what you were trying to do, and the browser and assistive technology you use. We aim to reply within five working days, and we fix barriers on the generator itself before anything else.
