Generate last names for fiction, games, pen names, and original characters: common and distinctive English surnames, cool place-name and occupational names, and authentic surnames from dozens of cultures, ready to pair with any first name.
About last names
Almost every surname in the world comes from one of four sources: a parent's name (Johnson, O'Brien, Ivanov, Fernandez), a place or landscape feature (Ashford, Van den Berg, Dubois, Yamamoto), an occupation (Fletcher, Schneider, Kowalski, Ferreira), or a nickname for appearance or character (Brown, Russo, Armstrong, Crane). Knowing that is the fastest way to pick a surname that sounds right: a hero from a farming village can carry a landscape name, a merchant family an occupational one, and a noble house a place name with a preposition in it (de, van, von, of).
The names below are grouped loosely by origin so you can match a surname to a first name or setting. There are cool, slightly literary English surnames (Blackwood, Ravenscroft, Sterling, Marlowe) that suit protagonists and OCs; everyday Anglo-American names; and authentic surnames from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Poland, Czechia, Hungary, Russia, Ukraine, the Balkans, Greece, the Middle East, India, Korea, Japan, China, Vietnam, and West and East Africa.
Every entry is a real surname in use today. For a villain or an aristocrat, lean toward harder consonants and two or three syllables (Thackeray, Montgomery, Devereaux); for someone ordinary and likeable, a short common name like Hale, Brooks, or Reilly does the job.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the surname's origin to the first name: Siobhan Gallagher, Matteo Romano, and Priya Sharma read as real people, while Siobhan Yamamoto raises a question you then have to answer in the story.
- Say the full name out loud. Avoid surnames that rhyme with or repeat the first name's ending (Aiden Hayden, Lily Reilly) and watch the syllable rhythm: a one-syllable first name pairs well with a two- or three-syllable surname and vice versa.
- For a 'cool' protagonist, place-name surnames with hard consonants (Blackwood, Ashford, Kincaid) feel strong; for comic or cosy characters pick softer, shorter names (Bellamy, Finch, Nolan).
- Give related characters surnames from the same region so a family or town feels coherent, and reuse the same handful of names across minor characters rather than inventing a new origin for every walk-on part.
- Check initials and nicknames: the first and last name together should not form an awkward acronym or an unintended word.
Frequently asked questions
How do I pick a last name based on a first name?
Look at where the first name comes from and choose a surname from the same culture or a neighbouring one, then check the rhythm: alternate long and short, avoid rhymes, and avoid ending the first name and starting the surname with the same sound.
What makes a last name sound cool?
Usually a concrete image plus strong consonants: Blackwood, Thorne, Ravenscroft, Sterling, Wolfe. Names built from landscape words (wood, ford, stone, hill) or from metals and birds feel vivid without sounding invented.
Can I use these surnames for an OC or a book character?
Yes. All of them are real surnames with many bearers, so they read as authentic and none points to a single living person. For fantasy settings you can still use them as-is or drop a syllable to make them feel older.
What are the most common last names in the world?
Wang, Li, and Zhang in China, Nguyen in Vietnam, Kim in Korea, Garcia and Rodriguez across the Spanish-speaking world, Silva in Brazil, Smith and Jones in English-speaking countries, and Müller in Germany. The list includes several of these alongside rarer names.
