Browse 500 real surnames that sound strange in English, from Shufflebottom, Gotobed and Drinkwater to Onions, Pigg, Death and Featherstonehaugh. Most of them began as something quite ordinary, and the guide explains the main kinds.

About weird last names

The surnames here are ones that real families carry, and almost none of them started out strange. English surnames settled between about 1200 and 1400, when a second name was only a description: where you lived, what you did, whose child you were or what the neighbors called you. The words have shifted since then and the names have not.

Take the -bottom names. A bottom was the floor of a valley, so Winterbottom was a valley used in winter and Longbottom a long one. Coward kept cows, Daft meant gentle or meek, and Graves comes from a word for a steward. Onions is the Welsh given name Einion, Pickles was a small enclosed field, and Gosling usually goes back to the Norman name Goscelin. Slaughter points to two muddy villages in Gloucestershire. Others mean what they say: Gotobed, Drinkwater, Doolittle and Goodenough were nicknames, some kind and some teasing.

The list also has names that are hard for another reason, such as Featherstonehaugh, said as Fanshaw, and Cholmondeley, said as Chumley, plus a few from other languages that happen to spell an English word, like Kiss, Angst and Hamburger. People answer to all of these every day, so the page explains them and mocks nobody.

How to choose weird last names

  • For comic fiction, one odd surname in a cast is enough. Pair it with a plain first name, as in Alan Shufflebottom or Mary Gotobed, and let the other characters never mention it.
  • Pick by the effect you want. The -bottom and body names read as gentle comedy, the grim group (Death, Coffin, Blood, Slaughter) suits gothic stories and black humor, and the hard spellings suit old money.
  • If you use a hard spelling, let someone get it wrong on the page. A clerk who reads Mainwaring as it is written and is corrected to Mannering tells the reader how to say it without a footnote.
  • A surname that is an English word can do quiet work: a nervous Mr. Tremble, a slow Mrs. Haste. Used once it is a wink. Used for every character it turns the story into a cartoon.
  • Living people carry these names. If your character is a villain or a fool, search the full name first so that it does not match a real person you could embarrass.

Frequently asked questions

Are these weird last names real?

Yes. The list holds surnames that real families carry, mostly from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, with some from North America and the rest of Europe. Invented joke names are left out, so you will find Shufflebottom, Pigg and Gotobed here and nothing in the style of a cartoon. A few of them are now very rare.

Why do so many English surnames end in -bottom?

In the north of England a bottom, or botham, was the floor of a valley, and a family was named after the valley it lived in. Ramsbottom is a town in Lancashire, Winterbottom was a valley used in the winter months and Sidebottom was a wide valley. The names cluster in Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire to this day.

How do you say Featherstonehaugh, Cholmondeley and Marjoribanks?

Featherstonehaugh is traditionally said as Fanshaw, Cholmondeley as Chumley and Marjoribanks as Marchbanks. Mainwaring is Mannering, Beauchamp is Beecham, Menzies is Mingis in Scotland and St John is Sinjin. The spelling froze centuries ago while the spoken form kept wearing down. Some families now say their name the way it is spelled, so ask when you can.

Is Death really a surname?

It is, though many families write it De'Ath. Where it comes from is disputed: one explanation is the town of Ath in what is now Belgium, another is a man who played Death in a medieval pageant. Coffin, Slaughter and Graves sound just as dark, yet they go back to a basket, a muddy place and a steward.
