Belarusian Last Name Generator
Belarusian surnames alone, in Belarusian spelling
Generate Belarusian last names on their own, written the Belarusian way: -vich names like Bahdanovich and Stankevich, -enka names like Kavalenka and Tarasenka, -ski and -au names like Dubrouski and Bykau, and short word surnames like Zhuk, Busel and Vouk.
About Belarusian last names
Belarusian surnames are easy to spot by their endings. The signature type ends in -vich: Bahdanovich, Stankevich, Matskevich, Karatkevich. These began as a way to name a man's children and later froze into family names, and they are the same for men and women. Beside them stand -enka (Kavalenka, Tarasenka), the Belarusian spelling of the ending written -enko in Ukraine, then -uk and -chuk (Karpuk, Kavalchuk), -chyk and -ik (Adamchyk, Novik) and -onak (Kavalionak).
Names in -ski and -tski (Dubrouski, Savitski) usually point to a place and have close cousins in Poland. Names in -au, -ou and -eu (Bykau, Kazlou, Yakauleu) are the Belarusian forms of the endings written -ov and -ev in Russian. A large group is simply a word used as a name, often a trade, an animal or a nickname: Kaval (smith), Hanchar (potter), Zhuk (beetle), Busel (stork), Vouk (wolf), Maroz (frost).
Spellings here follow Belarusian, where an unstressed o is written a and the Russian g is an h, so Kovalenko becomes Kavalenka and Bogdanovich becomes Bahdanovich. A dozen names also appear in the Russian-style spelling that many families carry abroad, such as Kovalenko and Kozlovsky. An ending hints at a language or a region at most. It never proves where a family comes from.
How to choose Belarusian last names
- Match the spelling to the setting. Kavalenka, Bahdanovich and Dubrouski suit a character with Belarusian papers today, while Kovalenko, Bogdanovich and Dubrovsky suit a Soviet-era document or a family that emigrated with Russian-style spellings.
- For a woman, change only the -ski and -au types: Dubrouski becomes Dubrouskaya, Bykau becomes Bykava and Kavaliou becomes Kavaliova. Names in -vich, -enka, -uk and the word surnames stay exactly as they are.
- Do not confuse a surname with a patronymic. In a full formal name the middle part ends in -avich or -ovich for a man and -auna for a woman and changes every generation. This list holds family names only.
- Pair the surname with a given name in the same spelling, such as Aliaksandr, Siarhei, Volha or Hanna. The Belarusian name generator linked below has full names if you want to see how the parts sit together.
- Mix the endings across a cast. A village where one family is Stankevich, the next Karpuk and the next Zhuk reads more like life than a page of -vich names.
Frequently asked questions
What are typical Belarusian last names?
The best-known type ends in -vich, such as Bahdanovich, Stankevich and Klimovich. The list also covers -enka names such as Kavalenka and Tarasenka, -ski names such as Dubrouski and Kazlouski, -au names such as Bykau and Marozau, and word surnames such as Zhuk, Novik and Maroz.
What does -vich mean in a Belarusian surname?
It is a suffix that once marked the children of the man named in the stem, so Bahdanovich started out as the family of a man called Bahdan. Over time these names became fixed and hereditary. The same kind of suffix still forms patronymic middle names, which are not surnames and are left out of this list.
Why is it Kavalenka here and not Kovalenko?
They are one surname in two spellings. Belarusian writes an unstressed o as a and ends this type in -enka, so the Belarusian form is Kavalenka, while Kovalenko follows Russian and Ukrainian spelling. The list uses Belarusian forms throughout and adds the Russian-style twin for a dozen well-known names.
Do Belarusian last names change for women?
Only some of them. Surnames built like adjectives or possessives take a feminine ending, so Kaminski becomes Kaminskaya and Bykau becomes Bykava, and a few of these feminine forms are in the list as examples. Stankevich, Kavalenka, Karpuk and Zhuk are the same for everyone in the family.
