Most fantasy last names follow one of a few real-world patterns. The commonest is the heraldic compound: two plain English words fused into something that sounds like an old landed family, such as Ravenholt, Blackmoor or Winterbourne. These work because English surnames really did form this way, from places (Ashcombe, Harrowgate), features of land (Stillwater, Cragmoor) and epithets (Lightfoot, Greybeard), so the invented versions feel plausible even when the words are fanciful.

The second pattern borrows the phonology of another language. Elvish family names lean on liquid consonants and long vowels (Thalorien, Faelivrin), dwarvish clan names hit hard with stone-and-metal compounds (Ironforge, Grudgebearer), and noble houses in a Renaissance or Eastern European mold take Romance or Slavic endings (Duvallier, Cantacuzene, Morozova). Dark or villainous houses use sombre roots: Mortlake, Graveshade, Sablewood.

When you choose, match the surname to the culture you have built rather than to the character alone. A family name is shared, so it should sound like something an entire village or court would say without tripping over it, and it should pair cleanly with the first names you are already using.
