A list of 500 real long last names, every one at least 11 letters and each given with its language: Featherstonehaugh (English), Papadimitriou (Greek), Wojciechowski (Polish), Venkataraghavan (Tamil), Kamakawiwoʻole (Hawaiian). Surnames only, for characters, trivia nights and anyone who wants to see how long a family name can get.

About long last names

The longest last name most people have heard of is Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff, 35 letters, the everyday short form used by a German-born typesetter in Philadelphia whose full surname ran to several hundred letters. Nothing else comes close, but plenty of ordinary family names pass 15 letters, and this list collects them: single surnames of 11 letters and more, each followed by its language in parentheses.

Long surnames are built in a few ways. German, Dutch and English stack place words (Wittgenstein, Nieuwenhuizen, Haythornthwaite). Greek adds Papa-, for a priest in the family, and endings such as -opoulos to a given name. Polish -owski and Georgian -shvili turn a place or a parent into a family name. Tamil, Telugu and Sinhala names are often whole Sanskrit compounds, Malagasy names are short phrases behind Ra- or Andria-, and many Hawaiian surnames began as one person's full name. Thai surnames date from a 1913 law that asked each family for a name of its own, which pushed new names longer. Icelandic, Amharic and Tigrinya entries are patronymics rather than inherited names, and are labeled that way.

The list runs across more than 60 languages in mixed order, so each batch travels widely. Diacritics and the Hawaiian ʻokina are kept. Names from other scripts are shown in a common romanization, and other spellings exist.

How to choose long last names

  • Count the characters before you commit. Many forms, game fields and jersey backs stop at 12 to 20 letters, and Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff fits almost none of them.
  • Pair a long surname with a short given name. Ana Guerricaechevarría or Jan Wojciechowski reads easily; two long names in a row become hard to say and harder to remember.
  • Match the language to the character's background instead of picking by length alone. Rakotomalala belongs to Madagascar, Hettiarachchi to Sri Lanka and Kvaratskhelia to Georgia, and readers from those places will notice.
  • Look up the pronunciation. Featherstonehaugh is traditionally said "Fanshaw", Cholmondeley "Chumley" and Marjoribanks "Marchbanks", and most names from other languages have a stress pattern you cannot guess from the spelling.
  • Keep the accents, the ʻokina and the capital letters inside a name (MacGillivray, Ó Súilleabháin, Kamakawiwoʻole). They are part of the spelling, and a long name is not a joke about the language it comes from.

Frequently asked questions

What is the longest last name?

The longest surname in regular use that is widely quoted is Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff, at 35 letters. In this list the next longest are Sripathi Panditaradhyula (Telugu, 23 letters in two words), Vennegoor of Hesselink (Dutch, 20 letters in three words) and Rajaonarimampianina (Malagasy, 19 letters in one word). After that come several 18-letter names, including Guerricaechevarría, Juangroongruangkit and Christodoulopoulos.

What is the longest English last name?

Featherstonehaugh, at 17 letters, is the one usually named, and it is famous for a traditional pronunciation far shorter than its spelling. Other long English surnames in the list are Haythornthwaite, Thistlethwaite, Postlethwaite, Shufflebottom and Hollingsworth. Most of them are old place names from the north of England.

Why are some countries' surnames so long?

It comes down to how the language builds names. Thailand introduced surnames by law in 1913 and asked families to choose names that no other family had, so names such as Sirivadhanabhakdi grew long. Malagasy, Sinhala and Tamil names pack a whole phrase or a compound of several words into one name, and Greek, Georgian and Polish add endings to a parent's name or a place. In Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada naming the last name is often a father's or the person's own given name rather than an inherited family name, which is why long given names such as Venkataraghavan appear here as last names.

Are hyphenated or double surnames included?

No. Every entry is a single surname, although a few are written as more than one word, such as Van der Westhuizen, Espírito Santo or Mac Giolla Phádraig. Double-barrelled names have their own page, and long full names built from several parts are on the long name generator.
