Villain Last Name Generator

A villain's last name does quiet work. Before the character says a word, Moriarty, Murdstone, Lestrange or Ravenscroft has already told the reader what to expect, and the trick is that none of those are silly. Good villain surnames lean on a few reliable cues: dark nature words folded into place-name endings (Blackwood, Gravesend, Thornquist, Mortlake), hard consonant clusters that sound clipped and cold (Voss, Krane, Zorn, Drexler), aristocratic particles that suggest old money and older grudges (Von Falkenberg, De la Vega, Malatesta, Rochefort), and borrowed words for death, shadow and poison from Latin or the Romance languages (Tenebris, Sombra, Noirot, Verdugo, Velenosi).

This generator mixes all of those registers with 500 surnames: English gothic compounds, comic-book sharpness, German, Russian, Romanian, French, Italian, Spanish and Greek names with sinister meanings, and classic public-domain villains from Dickens, Dumas, Stoker and Shakespeare. Pair one with a plain or elegant first name and the contrast does the rest. Doctor Helena Vexley, Councilman Arthur Blackfen and Silas Mortlock all sound like trouble without ever being cartoonish.
