Viking Last Name Generator

A Viking did not inherit a family name. What stood in the last-name slot was either a patronymic, the father's name in the genitive plus -son or -dóttir (Ragnarsson, Eiríksdóttir), or a byname earned for a trait, a deed, a homeland or a piece of clothing: Haraldr Hárfagri (Fairhair), Ragnarr Loðbrók (Hairy-Breeches), Björn Járnsíða (Ironside), Eiríkr Blóðøx (Bloodaxe). The most famous Vikings carried both, and saga writers switched between them depending on what they needed the reader to remember.

This generator groups names by layer so you can build a name the way a saga would. The patronymics use the genitive stems Old Norse and modern Icelandic actually use (Hákonarson, Sigurðardóttir, Þórðarson), with anglicised spellings for easy typing, and a smaller set of Danish and Norwegian -sen forms for later settings. Bynames appear in Old Norse (Tjúguskegg, Hausakljúfr, inn Digri) and in plain English (Forkbeard, Skullsplitter, the Stout) because translated sagas use either. A convincing Viking-age name is usually a given name plus one patronymic and, for a notable character, one earned byname: Thorfinn Sigurdsson Skullsplitter, Unn Ketilsdottir the Deep-Minded.
