About spanish last names
Spanish last names fall into a few clear families. The biggest is the patronymic group ending in -ez, meaning "son of": Fernández (son of Fernando), Rodríguez (Rodrigo), López (Lope), Martínez (Martín), Sánchez (Sancho), Pérez (Pedro). These dominate the top of the list in Spain and across Latin America, which is why a realistic cast needs a couple of them. Next come place names (Navarro, Toledo, Sevilla, Medina, Villanueva), then descriptive names (Moreno for dark hair, Rubio for fair, Delgado for slim, Calvo for bald), occupations (Herrero, Zapatero, Escribano) and natural features (Ríos, Vega, Peña, Campos, Naranjo).
Region changes the flavor. Basque surnames are long and full of tx, tz and -aga endings (Etxeberria, Zubizarreta, Larrañaga); Catalan names are short and clipped (Puig, Bosch, Serra, Pujol); Galician ones often end in -eiro or -ás (Piñeiro, Barreiro, Carballo). Particle surnames (De la Fuente, Del Río, De los Santos) and two-part noble names (Fernández de Córdoba, Hurtado de Mendoza) signal old or aristocratic families. In Latin America you will also meet names that are rare in Spain, such as Treviño, Valenzuela, Jaramillo and Betancourt.
Remember that Spanish speakers carry two surnames, father's first and mother's second, so pair any two from this list for a full legal name.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pair two surnames for realism: García López, Ruiz Delgado. In Spain and most of Latin America the first is the father's, the second the mother's, and women keep both after marriage.
- Anchor a cast with one or two -ez names. A Spanish-speaking group with no Fernández, Rodríguez or Martínez in it feels slightly off.
- Use region to characterize. A Zubizarreta or Etxeberria reads as Basque, a Puig or Bosch as Catalan, a Treviño or Cantú as northern Mexican, a Betancourt or Jaramillo as Colombian or Caribbean.
- Keep the accents: Gómez, Núñez, Díaz and Jiménez are spelled with them in Spanish. Dropping accents is fine for an English-speaking or US-born character, and is itself a realistic detail.
- For a historical or noble character, use a particle or compound surname: De la Torre, Del Valle, Ponce de León, Hurtado de Mendoza.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most common Spanish last names?
In Spain the top ten are García, Rodríguez, González, Fernández, López, Martínez, Sánchez, Pérez, Gómez and Martín. In Mexico and much of Latin America Hernández, García, Martínez, López, González and Rodríguez lead, with Flores, Ramírez and Torres close behind.
Why do so many Spanish surnames end in -ez?
The -ez ending is a medieval patronymic meaning "son of". Fernández is the son of Fernando, Rodríguez of Rodrigo, López of Lope, Pérez of Pedro, Sánchez of Sancho, Álvarez of Álvaro. They were fixed as hereditary surnames centuries ago, which is why they are so widespread today.
Do Spanish people have two last names?
Yes. A Spanish legal name has a first surname (traditionally the father's first surname) and a second surname (the mother's first surname), and both are kept for life. Carmen García López is the daughter of a García and a López. Most everyday use is just the first surname.
What is the difference between Spanish and Hispanic last names?
Spanish surnames come from Spain; Hispanic or Latino surnames include the same core names plus ones that grew common in the Americas, such as Treviño, Valenzuela, Zepeda, Jaramillo and Betancourt. This generator includes both, so it works for characters from Madrid, Mexico City, Bogotá or San Juan.
