A vampire's surname usually carries more history than the vampire admits to. The genre's founding names are real aristocratic families: Vlad Dracula belonged to the Drăculești branch of the House of Basarab, and Elizabeth Báthory, Nádasdy, and Hunyadi are all genuine Hungarian noble houses. Nineteenth-century fiction added invented but plausible titles: Lord Ruthven, Sir Francis Varney, Countess Karnstein, and later Count Orlok and Baron von Krolock. Anne Rice's Lestat de Lioncourt set the template for French nobility, and Twilight's Cullen and Volturi show that even ordinary or Italian surnames work if the family behind them is old enough.

That is the pattern to imitate. The best vampire last names fall into a few groups: real Romanian, Hungarian, Serbian, or Russian family names (Dumitrescu, Rákóczi, Volkov); noble particles like von, de, and van attached to a place (Von Carstein, De Montfort, Van der Berg); Latin words for night, blood, and death used as a house name (Noctis, Sanguis, Tenebris); and Victorian English gentry surnames with a dark edge (Ravenscroft, Ashcroft, Harrowgate). Vampire: The Masquerade adds clan names (Ventrue, Toreador, Lasombra) that many players use as surnames.

Compound names like Bloodmoon or Darkmore appear here too, but sparingly; they read as pulpy unless the whole setting is pulpy. For a vampire who has lived centuries, a name that could appear in a real land registry is almost always more unsettling.
