Built for D&D, Pathfinder, Warhammer, WoW and original fiction.

About dwarf last names

Dwarf last names are really clan names, and the best ones sound like they were earned. The dominant fantasy convention, set by D&D and World of Warcraft, is a two-part English compound: a material or mountain word (Iron, Stone, Bronze, Crag, Coal) joined to a tool, body part, or deed (brand, helm, fist, beard, breaker). Battlehammer, Bronzebeard, Ironfoot, and Stonehelm all follow it, and the pattern reads instantly as dwarven because it describes what the family makes, mines, or has survived. The trick is to keep both halves concrete; Goldvein and Kegbelly sound like a family, while abstract pairings like Honorheart do not.

Tolkien's dwarves give two other options. In public they use Norse names and patronymics (Thorin Oakenshield, Gimli son of Gloin), so surnames like Thorinsson, Dainsdottir, or Halvorsen fit a Northern setting, and place-names such as Belegost or Dimrill work as 'of the hall' surnames. Their secret tongue, Khuzdul, supplies harsher words with k, z, and doubled consonants (Khazdum, Zirakbund, Azaghal) for settings where dwarves are old and secretive. Germanic smith-names like Steinhauer and Eisenfaust add a third flavor for Warhammer-style holds.

Pick one convention per clan and let rival clans use another, so players can tell a Thunderbrew from a Kraggenholt at a glance.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pair a material or landscape word with a tool, body part, or deed (Coalhand, Cragjaw, Orebreaker); both halves should be things you could point at in a mine or a forge.
  • Use a patronymic (-sson, -sdottir, -sen) when you want a Northern, Tolkien-style feel; it also tells the table who the character's parent was, which is free backstory.
  • Reserve Khuzdul-style names (Khazdum, Bundulath, Nurunkhal) for ancient or secretive clans, and let common dwarves use plainer compound names.
  • Check how the surname sounds after a short first name: 'Brokk Hollowaxe' and 'Thora Ironvein' flow; a long first name plus a long clan name gets clumsy in play.
  • A deed-name like Trollbane, Grudgebearer, or Twicebroken implies a story; give one NPC a deed-name and keep the rest ordinary so it lands.

Frequently asked questions

Do dwarves have last names in D&D and Tolkien?

In D&D, every dwarf belongs to a clan and uses the clan name as a surname (Battlehammer, Brawnanvil, Fireforge, Ironfist). Tolkien's dwarves mostly use patronymics ('Gimli son of Gloin') and epithets like Oakenshield or Ironfoot in public, keeping their true Khuzdul names secret.

What makes a surname sound dwarven rather than generic fantasy?

Concreteness and weight. Dwarven surnames reference stone, metal, tools, beards, ale, and underground places, and they favor short, hard syllables. Ironbrand and Kegbelly sound dwarven; flowing names with soft vowels sound elven.

Can I use these last names for female dwarves?

Yes. Clan names are shared by every member regardless of gender. If you use patronymics, Norse convention gives -sson for sons and -sdottir for daughters, so Thora Dainsdottir and Brokk Dainsson are siblings of the same clan.

How do I invent a clan name that is not already famous?

Swap one half of a familiar compound for something unexpected: keep the material (Bronze, Slate, Tin) but change the second word to a tool or food (Bronzebellow, Slatehand, Mallowkeg). Then say it aloud with your character's first name to make sure it still sounds like a dwarf.
