About Italian last names

Italian surnames carry a map of the country. The most common, Rossi, and its southern twin Russo both began as a nickname for someone with red hair, and the same split runs through the list: the north and center prefer plural forms ending in -i (Bianchi, Ferrari, Ricci), while the south keeps the singular -o (Bianco, Ferraro, Rizzo). Trades gave Ferrari, Fabbri and Ferraro (all blacksmiths), Barbieri, Sartori and Molinari. Home towns and regions gave Romano, Lombardi, Toscano, Genovese and Calabrese.

Region also shows in the ending. Veneto names often stop on a consonant (Trevisan, Furlan, Visentin, Zanon). Milan has Brambilla, Fumagalli and Colombo. Sardinian names end in -u or -s: Porcu, Puddu, Piras, Melis. Sicily keeps the old article (Lo Presti, La Rosa, Li Causi), and the accented final vowels of Calabria and north-eastern Sicily (Macrì, Laganà, Calabrò) usually point to Greek roots. De and Di names are patronymics, the child of Luca, Marco or Pietro. Di forms are thickest in Abruzzo, De forms in Campania.

A few names were first given to foundlings: Esposito in Naples, Innocenti in Florence, Proietti in Rome, Trovato in Sicily and Casadei in Romagna. The list gives one surname per entry and mixes every group, so results travel from Turin to Palermo.

How to choose Italian last names

  • Match the surname to where the character comes from. Brambilla reads as Milanese, Trevisan as Venetian, Parodi as Genoese, Scognamiglio as Neapolitan, Pappalardo as Sicilian and Porcu as Sardinian.
  • Keep the -i and -o split in mind. A family from Bologna or Florence is more likely to be Ferrari or Ricci, one from Bari or Cosenza Ferraro or Rizzo.
  • Write prefix names the Italian way: a capital letter and a separate word (De Luca, Di Stefano, Lo Bianco), with an apostrophe before a vowel (D'Angelo, D'Amico, Dell'Orto). Italian American families often close them up as DeLuca or DiStefano.
  • Italian women keep their birth surname on official documents after marriage, so a married couple in a modern Italian setting normally carries two different surnames.
  • For family history, confirm the exact spelling in the records of the town itself. One letter separates many surnames: Ferrari, Ferraro, Ferrara and Ferrero are four different names.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common Italian last name?

Rossi is the most common surname in Italy, followed by Russo, Ferrari, Esposito, Bianchi, Romano and Colombo. Rossi leads in the north and center, Russo in the south, and Esposito is concentrated around Naples. All seven are in this list.

What do De, Di, Del and Lo mean in Italian surnames?

De and Di mean "of" and usually mark a patronymic: Di Pietro is the child of Pietro, De Luca the child of Luca. Del, Della and Dell' mean "of the" and often point to a place or a nickname, as in Del Monte and Della Valle. Lo, La and Li are the old definite article, typical of Sicily and the far south: Lo Bianco, La Rocca, Li Causi.

How can I tell which region an Italian surname comes from?

Endings are the quickest clue. A final consonant suggests Veneto or Friuli (Pavan, Marangon, Bressan), -ero is Piedmontese (Ferrero, Barbero, Olivero), -ati is Lombard (Galbiati, Casati), and -u or -s is Sardinian (Cossu, Marras). In the south look for -iello around Naples (Vitiello), the article in Sicily (Lo Monaco) and an accented last vowel in Calabria (Nisticò).

Are these real Italian surnames?

Yes. The list is made of surnames in everyday use in Italy, from nationwide names like Rossi and Bianchi to local ones like Cazzaniga, Scognamiglio and Pulvirenti, and none is an invented Italian-sounding name. It has not been compared with any civil register, so for genealogy confirm a spelling in the records of the town.
