Gothic last names work by suggestion rather than announcement. Germanic and Eastern European names (Von Krolock, Nádasdy, Volkov, Corvinus) evoke Transylvanian castles and Habsburg decay, while Italian names (Malatesta, Morosini, Sanguinetti) carry Renaissance intrigue.

Bird names (Crowe, Rooke, Corbin, Nachtigall, Corvo), gravestone trades (Graves, Sexton, Cranmer) and hard single syllables (Vane, Voss, Kane, Fell) round out the palette. Pair any of these with an old-fashioned first name and the character sounds like the last heir to something.
