Tiefling Last Name Generator

Tieflings in Dungeons & Dragons do not have a single naming tradition, and that is the key to picking a convincing last name. Most tieflings are born to human parents or raised in human communities, so the majority simply carry the family name of wherever they grew up: a Waterdhavian tiefling might be a Blackwell or a Sinclair, one from Calimshan a Vasquez or a Salazar. In Baldur's Gate 3 the Elturel refugees follow this pattern, and Karlach, Zevlor and Dammon go by single names or ordinary human ones.

The second tradition is Infernal. Tieflings descended from a specific fiendish bloodline sometimes take a surname in the language of the Nine Hells, full of hard consonants and z, x and th sounds: Zorafin, Kalyth, Sabaroth, Vorthax, Ekharon. The 5e Player's Handbook lists Akmenos, Damakos, Kairon, Mordai, Skamos and similar as Infernal names, and many players repurpose those as bloodline surnames. The third tradition is the chosen name. Tieflings who leave a family that rejected them, or who want to own their heritage rather than hide it, pick a surname that describes them: Ashvane, Cinderfell, Nightbloom, Redhorn.

Hyphenated names combine two of these, marking a tiefling proud of both a human house and an infernal line, and a few reject surnames altogether in favour of an origin, styling themselves of Avernus or of the Gate.
