About witch last names

A witch's last name does most of the atmospheric work, because witch first names are usually ordinary: Agnes, Alice, Margaret, Tamsin. The surnames that stick in the imagination come from a few real sources. The first is English and Scottish place-names, which supply the Ashcombes, Fenwicks, Grimshaws and Winterbournes; anything ending in -wick, -thwaite, -bourne, -mere or -shaw already sounds like a cottage at the edge of a wood. The second is the trial records themselves. Device, Nutter, Redferne and Demdike were the Pendle families of 1612; Waterhouse, Kempe and Gowdie come from Chelmsford, St Osyth and Auldearn. They are plain names made uncanny by history.

The third source is the hedgerow. Cunning folk were herbalists, so surnames built from plants (Henbane, Foxglove, Wormwood, Nettlefold, Rowantree) and from a witch's kit (Blackcandle, Cauldwell, Candlewick, Broomsedge) read instantly as witchy without announcing it. Continental traditions add their own flavour: French Lenoir and Ombrelune, German Rabenstein and Finsterwald, Russian Vedmina and Koldunova, which literally mean witch and sorcerer.

The trick is restraint. One dark compound per name is plenty; Morgana Ravenscroft works, Morgana Ravenshadowmoon does not. For a realistic hedge witch, choose a genuine-sounding place or trade surname and let the first name and the story carry the magic.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the surname to the witch's world: a Pendle-style hedge witch suits Nutter or Crowther, a glamorous coven matriarch suits Ravenscroft or Deveraux, a folk-horror villager suits Fogg or Mothersole.
  • Put the sinister element in only one half of the full name. Pair a plain first name (Bess, Agnes, Hester) with a dark surname, or a dramatic first name (Morgana, Circe) with a plain one.
  • Use place-name endings (-wick, -thwaite, -mere, -bourne, -shaw) when you want the name to feel real and old rather than invented.
  • For a whole family or coven bloodline, keep one surname and show each generation by changing only first names; the repeated surname becomes the family's reputation.
  • Say the full name aloud as a villager would whisper it. If it sounds like an accusation ('the Blackwell woman'), it is doing its job.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a last name sound witchy?

Usually one of three things: an old English place-name shape (Grimshaw, Winterbourne), a plant or tool of the trade hidden in it (Henbane, Candlewick), or a real association with the witch trials (Device, Nutter, Waterhouse). Hard consonants and dark colours (Black-, Grim-, Raven-) add to it, but a single such element is enough.

Are any of these real historical witch surnames?

Yes. Device, Nutter, Redferne, Demdike and Chattox were families accused at the 1612 Pendle trials; Waterhouse, Kempe, Gowdie, Sampson and Duncan come from other English and Scottish cases; Cloyce, Easty, Pudeator and Corwin appear in the Salem records. All of those people lived centuries ago and the surnames are free to use.

Can these surnames work for male witches or warlocks?

Absolutely. Surnames are not gendered, so Obadiah Fenwick, Corvus Rabenstein or Silas Mortlake are as at home in a grimoire as any witch. The Slavic names ending in -a (Volkova, Vedmina) are feminine forms; swap to Volkov or Vedmin for a man.

How do I pick a first name to go with a witch surname?

Go plain if the surname is dramatic and dramatic if the surname is plain. Old-fashioned English names such as Agnes, Tamsin, Hester, Mercy or Prudence work with almost anything; our witch name generator and female witch name generator have hundreds more.
