Fae Last Name Generator

Folklore fae almost never carried surnames. The Tuatha Dé Danann and the Aos Sí were known by a single name and a parent, which is why the oldest fae family names are patronymics: Manannán mac Lir (son of the sea), Aengus mac Óg, Gwyn ap Nudd, Blodeuwedd ferch Dôn. Others were named for the hill or rath they lived under, so a family name like Knockma, Ardagh or Glenshee reads as a fae house to anyone who knows the stories. Modern romantasy added the surnames most readers now expect: cool, aristocratic compounds such as Vansarrow, Thornevale and Ashveil that sound old, slightly French or Welsh, and a little dangerous.

The register is different from fairy surnames. Where a garden fairy might be a Dewbright or Pipkin, a fae house is a Duskmere, a Malvoire or a Gravethorn. The second element tends toward mere, vale, veil, hallow, court and thorn rather than anything cute; the first toward dusk, ash, night, hollow, silver and grey. Cornish and Welsh surnames (Tremayne, Penhallow, Gwyneira) borrow the same sound without needing invention, and plant names that bite or poison (Hellebore, Wolfsbane, Bryony) suit an Unseelie line.
