Generate fae last names for romantasy novels, D&D feywild characters and fairy-court worldbuilding: elegant invented house names like Vansarrow and Thornevale, Celtic sidhe patronymics, Cornish and Welsh-flavored family names, and darker Unseelie surnames such as Gravethorn and Malvoire.
About fae last names
Folklore fae almost never carried surnames. The Tuatha Dé Danann and the Aos Sí were known by a single name and a parent, which is why the oldest fae family names are patronymics: Manannán mac Lir (son of the sea), Aengus mac Óg, Gwyn ap Nudd, Blodeuwedd ferch Dôn. Others were named for the hill or rath they lived under, so a family name like Knockma, Ardagh or Glenshee reads as a fae house to anyone who knows the stories. Modern romantasy added the surnames most readers now expect: cool, aristocratic compounds such as Vansarrow, Thornevale and Ashveil that sound old, slightly French or Welsh, and a little dangerous.
The register is different from fairy surnames. Where a garden fairy might be a Dewbright or Pipkin, a fae house is a Duskmere, a Malvoire or a Gravethorn. The second element tends toward mere, vale, veil, hallow, court and thorn rather than anything cute; the first toward dusk, ash, night, hollow, silver and grey. Cornish and Welsh surnames (Tremayne, Penhallow, Gwyneira) borrow the same sound without needing invention, and plant names that bite or poison (Hellebore, Wolfsbane, Bryony) suit an Unseelie line.
This list mixes invented house names, Celtic patronymics, place-derived names and darker Unseelie surnames so you can give every court in your setting its own family sound.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick one sound per court. Seelie houses might all carry soft place-style names (Willowmere, Fernhallow, Everleigh); the Unseelie court hard ones (Gravethorn, Corvane, Malvoire). Readers will hear the faction before you explain it.
- Match surname weight to the first name: a long, ornate first name like Seraphine or Cassiel wants a short house name (Seraphine Vaeloth), while a clipped first name like Wren or Kell can carry Thornevale or Vansarrow.
- Use patronymics (mac Lir, ap Nudd, ferch Dôn) or hill names (Knockma, Glenshee) for ancient, folklore-rooted fae, and invented compounds for courtly romantasy fae. Mixing both in one family suggests a line that predates the courts.
- A fae house name should sound good spoken with contempt or ceremony: say 'Lord So-and-so of House X' aloud and drop anything that trips on the tongue.
- Give the ruling family a name tied to their land or power (Duskmere for a twilight court, Coldiron for one that tolerates iron) so the surname does worldbuilding for you.
Frequently asked questions
Do fae have last names in folklore?
Rarely. Irish and Welsh fae were named with a parent or a place: Manannán mac Lir, Gwyn ap Nudd, Áine of Knockainy. Surnames as a convention come from modern fantasy, where a court full of fae needs family names to keep the politics straight.
What is the difference between a fae last name and a fairy last name?
Mostly tone. Fairy surnames are small and playful (Thistledown, Pipkin, Dewbright). Fae surnames are courtly and colder (Vansarrow, Ashveil, Gravethorn), borrowing from Welsh, Cornish and French sounds and from thorny or poisonous plants rather than wildflowers.
How do I make an Unseelie last name?
Lean on hard consonants and darker first elements: Grave-, Sorrow-, Malv-, Corv-, Dread-, Night-, and second elements like -thorn, -marrow, -gate or -vaine. Toxic plants (Hellebore, Wolfsbane, Henbane) and birds of ill omen (Corbie, Rookwood, Nightjar) also work as stand-alone Unseelie surnames.
Can I use these fae surnames in a published novel or campaign?
Yes. The names here are invented compounds, public-domain folklore forms or ordinary place and plant words, so they are free to use. Avoid lifting house names tied to a specific published series if you are selling your work.
