Generate orc last names in every style fantasy uses: earned epithet surnames like Skullsplitter and Ironhide, guttural Black Speech family names like Ghorzak and Mokthar, Elder Scrolls gro- and gra- patronymics, Warcraft-style clan surnames, and 'the Grim' or 'of the Burning Plains' titles for D&D, Pathfinder and original worlds.

About orc last names

Orcs in most fantasy settings do not inherit surnames the way humans do; they earn them. The commonest orc last name is an epithet built from two blunt English words that record a deed, a wound or a trade: Skullsplitter, Ironhide, Elfbane, Brokentusk, Wolfrider. Warcraft made this the default with Hellscream, Doomhammer and Saurfang, and Warhammer's Grimgor Ironhide and Gorbad Ironclaw follow the same pattern. Because the name is earned, a young orc may have none at all, and a chieftain's children often take a different name from their father.

The second style is guttural and untranslated. Tolkien's Black Speech gave us Gorbag, Shagrat and Lugdush, and names like Ghorzak, Mokthar or Drakthul work as family or tribe names when you want the language to sound alien: hard G, K, Z, SH and TH sounds, back vowels, and one or two syllables. The Elder Scrolls adds patronymics, where gro- means son of and gra- means daughter of, so Urag gro-Shub and Borgakh gra-Dushnikh tell you the parent's name.

Finally there are titles rather than surnames: the Grim, the Tuskless, of the Burning Plains. These suit warlords, shamans and named villains. Mix styles across a tribe and keep each name short enough to roar.

How to choose orc last names

Earned epithets should say something true about the character. A scout is Longstride or Nightstalker, a shaman is Spiritcaller or Bonerattler, a veteran is Sevenscar or Halftusk; Skullsplitter belongs to someone who has actually split one.
For half-orcs raised among humans, a plain guttural family name (Karguk, Dushnak, Mokthar) or a gro-/gra- patronymic sounds more natural than a boastful epithet.
Use the same surname across a family only if it is a clan name (Frostwolf, Blackrock, Warsong); epithets are personal, so siblings should usually have different ones.
For an Elder Scrolls-style orc, gro- means son of and gra- means daughter of, followed by the parent's name: Gharol gro-Malog, Urzoga gra-Shuba.
Say the full name aloud once. A first name plus one two-part epithet is the limit; Grommash Hellscream the Grim of Draenor is three names too many.

Frequently asked questions

Do orcs have last names?

It depends on the setting. In Warcraft and most D&D worlds, orcs carry an earned epithet or a clan name rather than an inherited surname (Hellscream, Saurfang, Bloodfist). In The Elder Scrolls they use patronymics with gro- for sons and gra- for daughters. Tolkien's orcs are usually known by a single name only, so a last name there is a later fantasy convention.

What makes a good orc surname?

Two blunt, concrete words that describe a deed, a wound, a weapon or an animal: Ironhide, Elfbane, Brokentusk, Wolfrider. Keep it to two or three syllables, favour hard consonants, and make it something the orc could plausibly have earned. Names that only list adjectives (Darkshadow, Grimdoom) sound weaker than ones built from nouns.

How do half-orc last names work?

Half-orcs raised by humans usually take the human parent's surname or a simple orcish family name. Those raised by the tribe earn an epithet like any other orc. A common compromise is a guttural one-word name (Karguk, Urzul, Ghorzak) that sounds orcish without boasting.

What do gro- and gra- mean in orc names?

They are the patronymic markers used by Orsimer in The Elder Scrolls. gro- means son of and gra- means daughter of, followed by the name of a parent, so Borgakh gra-Dushnikh is Borgakh, daughter of Dushnikh. The names in this list follow that format so you can pair them with any first name.
