Generate cowboy last names for westerns, RPG characters and ranch hands: hard Anglo names like Boone and Stroud, Scots-Irish and Irish names like McGraw and Callahan, Texas German and Tejano families like Kleberg and Villalobos, plus a few dime-novel inventions such as Rimrock and Blackspur.

About cowboy last names

A cowboy surname does most of its work through sound. The names that read as Western are short, hard and old-stock: Boone, Stroud, Holt, Pike, Slade. Behind them is real history. The trail crews of the 1860s to 1890s drew on Southern and Scots-Irish families pushing west (McGraw, McCulloch, Kilgore, Calhoun), on the German settlements of the Texas Hill Country (Meusebach, Schreiner, Luckenbach), and on the Tejano, New Mexican and Californio ranching families who had worked cattle there for generations (Villalobos, Seguin, Baca, Vallejo).

The list is surnames only, so you can pair any of them with a first name or nickname of your own. It runs in nine strands: hard one-syllable Anglo names, Scots-Irish and Irish names, German and Scandinavian settler names, Spanish names of the borderlands, trade names such as Tanner, Roper and Drover, names tied to frontier history such as Goodnight, Chisholm and Bridger, old Southern and hill-country names, French fur-trade and Louisiana names such as Chouteau and Charbonneau, and evocative compounds such as Coldiron, Rainwater and Stillwell.

A small set are dime-novel style inventions rather than family names, for example Rimrock, Blackspur, Longrider and Coldcreek. Everything else is a real surname, which is not a claim that any particular family rode the trails.

How to choose cowboy last names

  • Balance the syllables. A long first name wants a short surname (Jedediah Holt, Temperance Pike); a short first name can carry a long one (Cal Breckenridge, Tom Shaughnessy).
  • Let the surname place the character. Schreiner or Luckenbach suggests the Texas Hill Country, Baca or Armijo New Mexico, Vallejo or Yorba California, Chouteau or Robidoux the Missouri fur trade, Calhoun or Rutledge a Southern family gone west.
  • Famous surnames carry baggage. Earp, Hickok, Holliday and Garrett are here because they are real family names, but a reader will think of the historical figure first, so use them for relatives, namesakes or alternate history.
  • Spanish names are given in the plain spelling common in U.S. records of the period. Add the accents if your setting calls for them: Chávez, Seguín, Sepúlveda, Vásquez, Treviño, De León.
  • Save the invented names (Rimrock, Brimstone, Ironhand, Sundown) for aliases, pulp heroes and outlaws who have left their real name behind.

Frequently asked questions

What are good cowboy last names?

For a classic sound try Boone, Stroud, Slade, Holt, McGraw, Callahan, Kilgore, Calhoun or Hightower. For something less expected, look at Coldiron, Rainwater, Stonecipher, Villalobos, Charbonneau or Luckenbach, all of which are real surnames.

Are these real surnames?

Nearly all of them are. They come from the Anglo, Scots-Irish, German, Scandinavian, Spanish and French naming traditions found in the nineteenth-century American West. About twenty are fiction-style inventions in the dime-novel manner, including Rimrock, Redrock, Blackspur, Silverspur, Longrider and Badwater.

Why are there Spanish and German names on a cowboy list?

Because the cattle trade was never only Anglo. Ranching methods, gear and much of the vocabulary came from Mexican vaqueros, German immigrants settled the Texas Hill Country from the 1840s, and Black, Tejano and immigrant hands rode on many trail crews. A cast that mixes McCoy, Kleberg, Benavides and Swenson is closer to the record than one made only of short Anglo names.

How do I make a full cowboy name from these?

Add a period first name (Silas, Amos, Josiah, Cora, Hattie) or a nickname built on a place, a trait or a trade, such as Slim, Doc or Dutch. Then say it out loud. Hattie Rainwater, Dutch Steinbach and Amos Coldiron all pass the test of sounding right when shouted across a corral.
