Futuristic Last Name Generator

A futuristic last name should feel like something a real family could carry three hundred years from now, not like a serial number. The most convincing approach is drift: start from surnames that already exist but are uncommon (Quist, Brask, Ruark, Tesk), then assume spelling has been simplified, a syllable has worn off, or two names have fused. Halvex, Kaelstrom and Sorvane all sound like surnames that could have been Halvorsen, Kjellström and Sorensen a few centuries earlier.

The second big source is mixed heritage. Space colonies, arcologies and corporate cities in most science fiction settings are places where populations have blended, so hyphenated surnames that pair distant origins (Okoro-Lindqvist, Delacroix-Ng, Reyes-Tanaka) instantly signal a future society. Frontier settlements and stations also produce place-based family names the way medieval villages once did: Coldharbor, Farpoint, Skyborne, Longreach. Use those sparingly, for characters whose ancestors were first-generation colonists.

For sleeker, more alien-feeling registers (cyberpunk megacorps, post-human societies, AI-descended families) lean on short surnames with x, v, z and k (Voxley, Dravik, Zabriskie, Vexley) and the occasional astronomical root (Arcturian, Callistan, Centauri). Pair any of these with a first name from the futuristic name generator to build a full character.
